وَمَا

وَتَصْدِيَةًۭ

بِمَا

كُنتُمْ

تَكْفُرُونَ

٣٥

وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمْ عِندَ ٱلْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُكَآءًۭ وَتَصْدِيَةًۭ ۚ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

And their worship at the (holy) House is naught but whistling and hand-clapping. Therefore (it is said unto them): Taste of the doom because ye disbelieve.

Their prayer at the House is nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment because of what you used to defy.

Their (unbelievers) prayer at the mosque is nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. We shall tell them, [Suffer torment for your disbelief.]

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ لِيَصُدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسْرَةًۭ ثُمَّ يُغْلَبُونَ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ يُحْشَرُونَ

⦿

Lo! those who disbelieve spend their wealth in order that they may debar (men) from the way of Allah. They will spend it, then it will become an anguish for them, then they will be conquered. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto hell,

Indeed the faithless spend their wealth to bar from the way of Allah. Soon they will have spent it, then it will be a cause of regret to them, then they will be overcome, and the faithless will be gathered toward Hell,

The disbelievers spend their wealth to turn men away from the way of God. They will continue to spend but it will become a source of regret for them and they will be defeated (because of their evil plans). The disbelievers will be gathered all togdher in Hell.

Surely those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (people) from the way of Allah; so they shall spend it, then it shall be to them an intense regret, then they shall be overcome; and those who disbelieve shall be driven together to hell.

Those who are bent on denying the truth are spending their wealth in debarring others from the path of God. They will continue to spend it in this way till, in the end, this spending will become a source of intense regret for them, and then they will be overcome. And those who denied the truth will be gathered together in Hell.

جن لوگوں نے کفر اختیار کیا یہ اپنے اموال کو صرف اس لئے خرچ کرتے ہیں کہ لوگوں کو راسِ خدا سے روکیں تو یہ خرچ بھی کریں گے اور اس کے بعدیہ بات ان کے لئے حسرت بھی بنے گی اور آخر میں مغلوب بھی ہوجائیں گے اور جن لوگوں نے کفر اختیار کیا یہ سب جہّنم کی طرف لے جائے جائیں گے

جن لوگوں نے حق کو ماننے سے انکار کیا ہے وہ اپنے مال خدا کے راستے سے روکنے کے لیے صرف کر رہے ہیں اور ابھی اور خرچ کرتے رہیں گے مگر آخر کار یہی کوششیں ان کے لیے پچھتاوے کا سبب بنیں گی، پھر وہ مغلوب ہوں گے، پھر یہ کافر جہنم کی طرف گھیر لائے جائیں گے

بیشک کافر اپنے مال خرچ کرتے ہیں کہ اللہ کی راہ سے روکیں تو اب انہیں خرچ کریں گے پھر وہ ان پر پچھتاوا ہوں گے پھر مغلوب کردیے جائیں گے اور کافروں کا حشر جہنم کی طرف ہوگا،

بے شک جو لوگ کافر ہیں وہ اس لئے اپنے مال خرچ کرتے ہیں کہ (لوگوں کو) خدا کی راہ سے روکیں یہ آئندہ بھی اسی طرح خرچ کریں گے اور پھر انجام کار یہ (مال خرچ کرنا) ان کے لئے حسرت اور پچھتاوے کا باعث بن جائے گا۔ اور بالآخر وہ مغلوب ہو جائیں گے۔ اور جو کافر ہیں وہ گھیر گھار کر جہنم کی طرف جمع کئے جائیں گے۔

لِيَمِيزَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِ وَيَجْعَلَ ٱلْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهُۥ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ فَيَرْكُمَهُۥ جَمِيعًۭا فَيَجْعَلَهُۥ فِى جَهَنَّمَ ۚ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ

⦿

That Allah may separate the wicked from the good, The wicked will He place piece upon piece, and heap them all together, and consign them unto hell. Such verily are the losers.

so that Allah may separate the bad ones from the good, and place the bad on one another, and pile them up together, and cast them into hell. It is they who are the losers.

God will separate the wicked from the pure and will pile the wicked ones on top of one anothcr to be cast into hell. They are indeed lost.

That Allah might separate the impure from the good, and put the impure, some of it upon the other, and pile it up together, then cast it into hell; these it is that are the losers.

اس لیے کہ اللہ گندے کو ستھرے سے جدا فرمادے اور نجاستوں کو تلے اوپر رکھ کر سب ایک ڈھیر بناکر جہنم میں ڈال دے وہی نقصان پانے والے ہیں

اور یہ سب کچھ اس لئے ہوگا کہ اللہ ناپاک (لوگوں) کو پاک لوگوں سے جدا کر دے اور جو ناپاک ہیں ان کو ایک دوسرے پر تہہ بہ تہہ رکھ کر ڈھیر بنائے اور پھر اس سارے ڈھیر کو جہنم میں جھونک دے۔ یہی وہ لوگ ہیں جو خسارہ (نقصان) اٹھانے والے ہیں۔

⦿

Tell those who disbelieve that if they cease (from persecution of believers) that which is past will be forgiven them; but if they return (thereto) then the example of the men of old hath already gone (before them, for a warning).

Say to the faithless, if they cease [their belligerence against the Muslims], what is already past shall be forgiven them. But if they resume [their hostilities], then the precedent of the predecessors has already come to pass.

Muhammad, tell the unbelievers, if you give up your evil behavior, God will forgive whatever you have done in the past. But if you transgras again, your fate will be the same as that of those (unbelievers) who lived before you.]

Say to those who disbelieve, if they desist, that which is past shall be forgiven to them; and if they return, then what happened to the ancients has already passed.

پیغمبر آپ کافروں سے کہہ دیجئے کہ اگر یہ لوگ اپنے کفر سے باز آجائیں تو ان کے گزشتہ گناہ معاف کردئیے جائیں گے لیکن اگر پھر پلٹ گئے تو گزشتہ لوگوں کا طریقہ بھی گزر چکا ہے

اے نبیؐ، ان کافروں سے کہو کہ اگر اب بھی باز آ جائیں تو جو کچھ پہلے ہو چکا ہے اس سے درگزر کر لیا جائے گا، لیکن اگر یہ اسی پچھلی روش کا اعادہ کریں گے تو گزشتہ قوموں کے ساتھ جو کچھ ہو چکا ہے وہ سب کو معلوم ہے

تم کافروں سے فرماؤ اگر وہ باز رہے تو جو ہو گزرا وہ انہیں معاف فرمادیا جائے گا اور اگر پھر وہی کریں تو اگلوں کا دستور گزر چکا ہے

(اے رسول(ص)) کافروں سے کہہ دو کہ اگر وہ اب بھی (شرارت سے) باز آجائیں۔ تو جو کچھ گزر چکا وہ انہیں معاف کر دیا جائے گا۔ اور اگر وہ اپنی سابقہ روش کا اعادہ کریں گے تو پھر گزشتہ (نافرمان) قوموں کے ساتھ (خدا کی روش) بھی گزر چکی ہے (ان کے ساتھ بھی وہی ہوگا)۔

وَقَٰتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌۭ وَيَكُونَ ٱلدِّينُ كُلُّهُۥ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنِ ٱنتَهَوْا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌۭ

And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.

Fight them until persecution is no more, and religion becomes exclusively for Allah. So if they desist, Allah indeed watches what they do.

Fight them so that idolatry will not exist any more and God's religion will stand supreme. If theygive up the idols), God will be Well Aware of what they do.

اور تم لوگ ان کفاّر سے جہاد کرو یہاں تک کہ فتنہ کا وجود نہ رہ جائے اور سارا دین صرف اللہ کے لئے رہ جائے پھر اگر یہ لوگ باز آجائیں تو اللہ ان کے اعمال کا خوب دیکھنے والا ہے

اے ایمان لانے والو، ان کافروں سے جنگ کرو یہاں تک کہ فتنہ باقی نہ رہے اور دین پورا کا پورا اللہ کے لیے ہو جائے پھر اگر وہ فتنہ سے رُک جائیں تو ان کے اعمال کا دیکھنے والا اللہ ہے

اور اگر ان سے لڑو یہاں تک کہ کوئی فساد باقی نہ رہے اور سارا دین اللہ ہی کا ہوجائے، اگر پھر وہ باز رہیں تو اللہ ان کے کام دیکھ رہا ہے،

(اے مسلمانو) ان (کفار) سے جنگ جاری رکھو یہاں تک کہ فتنہ و فساد ختم ہو جائے اور دین پورے کا پورا صرف اللہ کے لئے ہو جائے پھر اگر وہ (کفر و فتنہ پردازی سے) باز آجائیں تو وہ جو کچھ کر رہے ہیں اللہ اس کو خوب دیکھنے والا ہے۔

And if they turn away, then know that Allah is your Befriender - a Transcendent Patron, a Transcendent Helper!

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُم مِّن شَىْءٍۢ فَأَنَّ لِلَّهِ خُمُسَهُۥ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ إِن كُنتُمْ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا يَوْمَ ٱلْفُرْقَانِ يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌ

⦿

And know that whatever ye take as spoils of war, lo! a fifth thereof is for Allah, and for the messenger and for the kinsman (who hath need) and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, if ye believe in Allah and that which We revealed unto Our slave on the Day of Discrimination, the day when the two armies met. And Allah is Able to do all things.

Know that whatever thing you may come by, a fifth of it is for Allah and the Apostle, for the relatives and the orphans, for the needy and the traveller, if you have faith in Allah and what We sent down to Our servant on the Day of Separation, the day when the two hosts met; and Allah has power over all things.

⦿

Know that whatever property you may gain, one fifth belongs to God, the Messenger, the kindred, orphans, the needy and those who need money while on a journey. (This is the law) if you believe in God and what We revealed to Our Servant on the Day of Distinction (Badr) when the armies confronted each other. God has power over all things.

اور تمہیں معلوم ہو کہ جو کچھ مال غنیمت تم نے حاصل کیا ہے اس کا پانچواں حصہ اللہ اور اس کے رسُولؐ اور رشتہ داروں اور یتیموں اور مسکینوں اور مسافروں کے لیے ہے اگر تم ایمان لائے ہو اللہ پر اور اس چیز پر جو فیصلے کے روز، یعنی دونوں فوجوں کی مڈبھیڑ کے دن، ہم نے اپنے بندے پر نازل کی تھی، (تو یہ حصہ بخوشی ادا کرو) اللہ ہر چیز پر قادر ہے

إِذْ أَنتُم بِٱلْعُدْوَةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِٱلْعُدْوَةِ ٱلْقُصْوَىٰ وَٱلرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَٱخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِى ٱلْمِيعَٰدِ ۙ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِىَ ٱللَّهُ أَمْرًۭا كَانَ مَفْعُولًۭا لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَنۢ بَيِّنَةٍۢ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَىَّ عَنۢ بَيِّنَةٍۢ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

When ye were on the near bank (of the valley) and they were on the yonder bank, and the caravan was below you (on the coast plain). And had ye trysted to meet one another ye surely would have failed to keep the tryst, but (it happened, as it did, without the forethought of either of you) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done; that he who perished (on that day) might perish by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty) and he who survived might survive by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty). Lo! Allah in truth is Hearer, Knower.

When you were on the nearer side, and they on the farther side, while the caravan was below you, and had you agreed together on an encounter, you would have certainly failed to keep the tryst, but in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, so that he who perishes might perish by a manifest proof, and he who lives may live on by a manifest proof, and Allah is indeed all-hearing, all-knowing.

Recall when your army was positioned at the less defensible brink of the valley, (the pagans') army had the more defensible higher side of the valley and the caravan was led (out of your reach) below. This situation did not take place according to your previous plans, otherwise, everything would have been different. (It was God's plan) to place you in a vulnerable position, exposed to the enemy and it was His plan to lead the caravan out of your reach) so that His decree that you would be granted a victory by a miracle would become a doubtless fact and so that those who were to be destroyed would face destruction with a clear knowledge of the Truth and those who were to survive would also survive with a clear knowledge of the Truth. God is All-hearing and All-knowing.

Had you wished to set a time by mutual agreement, you would certainly have disagreed on the timing. However, the encounter took place, so that God might settle a matter which had already been ordained, so that he who was to perish might perish after clear evidence of the truth, and he who was to live might live in clear evidence of the truth. Surely, God is all hearing and all-knowing.

یاد کرو وہ وقت جبکہ تم وادی کے اِس جانب تھے اور وہ دُوسری جانب پڑاؤ ڈالے ہوئے تھے اور قافلہ تم سے نیچے (ساحل) کی طرف تھا اگر کہیں پہلے سے تمہارے اور ان کے درمیان مقابلہ کی قرارداد ہو چکی ہوتی تو تم ضرور اس موقع پر پہلو تہی کر جاتے، لیکن جو کچھ پیش آیا وہ اس لیے تھا کہ جس بات کا فیصلہ اللہ کر چکا تھا اسے ظہُور میں لے آئے تاکہ جسے ہلاک ہونا ہے وہ دلیل روشن کے ساتھ ہلاک ہو اور جسے زندہ رہنا ہے وہ دلیل روشن کے ساتھ زندہ رہے، یقیناً خدا سُننے والا اور جاننے والا ہے

جب تم نالے کے کنا رے تھے اور کافر پرلے کنا رے اور قا فلہ تم سے ترائی میں اور اگر تم آپس میں کوئی وعدہ کرتے تو ضرور وقت پر برابر نہ پہنچتے لیکن یہ اس لیے کہ اللہ پورا کرے جو کام ہونا ہے کہ جو ہلاک ہو دلیل سے ہلاک ہو اور جو جئے دلیل سے جئے اور بیشک اللہ ضرور سنتا جانتا ہے،

جس وقت تم قریب کے ناکہ پر تھے اور وہ دور کے ناکہ پر اور قافلہ تم سے ادھر نیچے (ساحل سمندر پر) تھا اگر تم ایک دوسرے سے وقت مقرر بھی کر لیتے تو بھی تم میں اختلاف ہو جاتا۔ لیکن خدا نے تو اس بات کو پورا کرنا تھا جو (مڈبھیڑ) ہونے والی تھی۔ تاکہ جو ہلاک ہو وہ اتمامِ حجت کے بعد ہلاک ہو اور جو زندہ رہے تو وہ بھی اتمام حجت کے بعد زندہ رہے بے شک اللہ بڑا سننے والا، بڑا جاننے والا ہے۔

When Allah showed them unto thee (O Muhammad) in thy dream as few in number, and if He had shown them to thee as many, ye (Muslims) would have faltered and would have quarrelled over the affair. But Allah saved (you). Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men).

When Allah showed them to you as few in your dream, and had He shown them as many, you would have lost heart, and disputed about the matter. But Allah spared you. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts.

In your dream, God showed (the pagans' army) as being only a few in number, for if He had showed them as a great number, you would have lost courage and would have started to quarrel among yourselves concerning this matter. But God saved you from that condition; He knows what is in your hearts.

اور یاد کرو وہ وقت جبکہ اے نبیؐ، خدا اُن کو تمہارے خواب میں تھوڑا دکھا رہا تھا، اگر کہیں وہ تمہیں اُن کی تعداد زیادہ دکھا دیتا تو ضرور تم لوگ ہمت ہار جاتے اور لڑائی کے معاملہ میں جھگڑا شروع کر دیتے، لیکن اللہ ہی نے اِس سے تمہیں بچایا، یقیناً وہ سینوں کا حال تک جانتا ہے

جب کہ اے محبوب! اللہ ٹمہیں کافروں کو تمہاری خواب میں تھو ڑا دکھاتا تھا اور اے مسلمانو! اگر وہ تمہیں بہت کرکے دکھاتا تو ضرور تم بزدلی کرتے اور معاملہ میں جھگڑا ڈالتے مگر اللہ نے بچا لیا بیشک وہ دلوں کی بات جانتا ہے،

And when He made you (Muslims), when ye met (them), see them with your eyes as few, and lessened you in their eyes, (it was) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done. Unto Allah all things are brought back.

And when He showed them to you as few in your eyes, when you met them [on the battlefield], and He made you [appear] few in their eyes, [it was] in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, and to Allah all matters are returned.

This website is a work of passion. It exists only for a couple of reasons:

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
2) You must also know what the bare truth is, so we can work together.

Because the process must be transparent, the entire website is available for you to download. You can go through the code, and if you can make any improvements to this process, you are most welcome to. It is a humble request to update me regarding the improvements so I can also update myself.

To be honest, I do not even know the names of many but I did learn from them. Some of these people were already dead by the time I read their input.

The Arabic text of the Quran was obtained from Tanzil. The additional translations were also obtained from Tanzil from this link.
