وَقَطَّعْنَٰهُمُ ٱثْنَتَىْ عَشْرَةَ أَسْبَاطًا أُمَمًۭا ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰهُ قَوْمُهُۥٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًۭا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍۢ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۚ وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْغَمَٰمَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَٰكُمْ ۚ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

We divided them into twelve tribes, nations; and We inspired Moses, when his people asked him for water, saying: Smite with thy staff the rock! And there gushed forth therefrom twelve springs, so that each tribe knew their drinking-place. And we caused the white cloud to overshadow them and sent down for them the manna and the quails (saying): Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you. They wronged Us not, but they were wont to wrong themselves. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

We split them up into twelve tribal communities, and We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, [saying], [Strike the rock with your staff,] whereat twelve fountains gushed forth from it. Every tribe came to know its drinking-place. And We shaded them with clouds, and We sent down to them manna and quails: [Eat of the good things We have provided you.] And they did not wrong Us, but they used to wrong [only] themselves. - Qarai, Ali Quli

We divided the descendants of Israel into twelve tribes and told Moses to strike the rock with his staff to let twelve fountains gush out therefrom; his people had asked him to supply them with water. The twelve flowing springs were divided among them (a spring for each tribe) and each tribe knew its drinking place well. We provided them with shade from the clouds, sent down manna and quails to them for food, and told them to eat the pure things which We had given them. اور ہم نے بنی اسرائیل کو یعقوب علیھ السّلام کی بارہ اولاد کے بارہ حصّو ں پر تقسیم کردیا اور موسٰی علیھ السّلام کی طرف وحی کی جب ان کی قوم نے پانی کا مطالبہ کیا کہ زمین پر عصا ماردو -انہوں نے عصا ماراتو بارہ چشمے جاری ہوگئے اس طرح کہ ہر گردہ نے اپنے گھاٹ کو پہچان لیا اور ہم نے ان کے سروں پر ابر کا سایہ کیااور ان پر من و سلوٰی جیسی نعمت نازل کی کہ ہمارے دیئے ہوئے پاکیزہ رزق کو کھاؤ اور ان لوگوں نے مخالفت کرکے ہمارے اوپر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ یہ اپنے ہی نفس پر ظلم کررہے تھے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

اور ہم نے اس قوم کو بارہ گھرانوں میں تقسیم کر کے انہیں مستقل گروہوں کی شکل دے دی تھی اور جب موسیٰؑ سے اس کی قوم نے پانی مانگا تو ہم نے اس کو اشارہ کیا کہ فلاں چٹان پر اپنی لاٹھی مارو چنانچہ اس چٹان سے یکایک بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے اور ہر گروہ نے اپنے پانی لینے کی جگہ متعین کر لی ہم نے اُن پر بادل کا سایہ کیا اور اُن پر من و سلویٰ اتارا کھاؤ وہ پاک چیزیں جو ہم نے تم کو بخشی ہیں مگر اس کے بعد انہوں نے جو کچھ کیا تو ہم پر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ آپ اپنے ہی اوپر ظلم کرتے رہے - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور ہم نے انہیں بانٹ دیا بارہ قبیلے گروہ گروہ، اور ہم نے وحی بھیجی موسیٰ کو جب اس سے اس کی قوم نے پانی ما نگا کہ اس پتھر پر اپنا عصا مارو تو اس میں سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے ہر گروہ نے اپنا گھاٹ پہچان لیا، اور ہم نے ان پر ابر کا سائبان کیا اور ان پر من و سلویٰ اتارا، کھاؤ ہماری دی ہوئی پاک چیزیں اور انہوں نے ہمارا کچھ نقصان نہ کیا لیکن اپنی ہی جانوں کا برا کرتے ہیں، - Ahmed Raza

اور ہم نے ان (بنی اسرائیل) کو بارہ خاندانوں کے بارہ گروہوں میں تقسیم کر دیا اور ہم نے موسیٰ کو وحی کی جب ان کی قوم نے ان سے پینے کے لیے پانی مانگا کہ ایک (خاص) چٹان پر اپنی لاٹھی مارو۔ چنانچہ اس سے بارہ چشمے پھوٹ نکلے۔ اور ہر گروہ نے اپنا اپنا گھاٹ معلوم کر لیا اور ہم نے ان پر ابر کا سایہ کیا اور (غذا کے لیے) ان پر من و سلویٰ نازل کیا (اور ان سے کہا) کھاؤ ان پاک اور پسندیدہ چیزوں میں سے جو ہم نے تمہیں عطا کی ہیں۔ انہوں نے (نافرمانی و ناشکری کرکے) ہم پر ظلم نہیں کیا بلکہ اپنے ہی اوپر ظلم و زیادتی کرتے رہے۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

وَإِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْكُنُوا۟ هَٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ وَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ وَقُولُوا۟ حِطَّةٌۭ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْبَابَ سُجَّدًۭا نَّغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِكُمْ ۚ سَنَزِيدُ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And when it was said unto them: Dwell in this township and eat therefrom whence ye will, and say [Repentance,] and enter the gate prostrate; We shall forgive you your sins; We shall increase (reward) for the right-doers. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

And when they were told, [Settle in this town and eat thereof whence you wish; and say, [[Relieve [us of the burden of our sins],]] and enter prostrating at the gate, that We may forgive your iniquities, and soon We shall enhance the virtuous.] - Qarai, Ali Quli

اور اس وقت کو یاد کرو جب ان سے کہاگیا کہ اس قریہ میں داخل ہوجاؤ اور جو چاہو کھاؤ لیکن حطّہ کہہ کر داخل ہونا اور داخل ہوتے وقت سجدہ کرتے ہوئے داخل ہونا تاکہ ہم تمھاری خطاؤں کو معاف کردیں کہ ہم عنقریب نیک عمل والوں کے اجر میںاضافہ بھی کردیں گے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ قَوْلًا غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِى قِيلَ لَهُمْ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِجْزًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَظْلِمُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

But those of them who did wrong changed the word which had been told them for another saying, and We sent down upon them wrath from heaven for their wrongdoing. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

But the wrongdoers changed the saying with other than what they had been told. So We sent against them a plague from the sky because of the wrongs they used to commit. - Qarai, Ali Quli

the unjust among them changed the words which they were told to say (in the prayer). Therefore, We sent upon them torment from the sky for their wrong deeds. - Sarwar, Muhammad

But those who were unjust among them changed it for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them; so We sent upon them a pestilence from heaven because they were unjust. - Shakir, Habib

Ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea, how they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came unto them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not unto them. Thus did We try them for that they were evil-livers. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Ask them about the town that was situated on the seaside, when they violated the Sabbath, when their fish would come to them on the Sabbath day, visibly on the shore, but on days when they were not keeping Sabbath they would not come to them. Thus did We test them because of the transgressions they used to commit. - Qarai, Ali Quli

(Muhammad), ask them about the (people of the) towns on the seashore. They had transgressed by catching fish on the Sabbath. Each Sabbath the fish came openly within their reach but not so on other days. Thus, We were testing them because of their evil deeds. - Sarwar, Muhammad

اور ان سے اس قریہ کے بارے میں پوچھو جو سمندر کے کنارے تھا اور جس کے باشندے شنبہ کے بارے میں زیادتی سے کام لیتے تھے کہ ان کی مچھلیاں شنبہ کے دن سطح آب تک آجاتی تھیں اور دوسرے دن نہیں آتی تھیں تو انہوں نے حیلہ گری کرنا شروع کردی -ہم اسی طرح ان کا امتحان لیتے تھے کہ یہ لوگ فسق اور نافرمانی سے کام لے رہے تھے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

اور ذرا اِن سے اُ س بستی کا حال بھی پوچھو جو سمندر کے کنارے واقع تھی اِنہیں یاد دلاؤ وہ واقعہ کہ وہاں کے لوگ سبت (ہفتہ) کے دن احکام الٰہی کی خلاف ورزی کرتے تھے اور یہ کہ مچھلیاں سبت ہی کے دن ابھر ابھر کر سطح پر اُن کے سامنے آتی تھیں اور سبت کے سوا باقی دنوں میں نہیں آتی تھیں یہ اس لیے ہوتا تھا کہ ہم ان کی نافرمانیوں کی وجہ سے ان کو آزمائش میں ڈال رہے تھے - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور ان سے حال پوچھو اس بستی کا کہ دریا کنارے تھی جب وہ ہفتے کے بارے میں حد سے بڑھتے جب ہفتے کے دن ان کی مچھلیاں پانی پر تیرتی ان کے سامنے آتیں اور جو دن ہفتے کا نہ ہوتا نہ آتیں اس طرح ہم انہیں آزمانتے تھے ان کی بے حکمی کے سبب، - Ahmed Raza

اور (اے پیغمبر) ان سے اس بستی کا حال پوچھو جو سمندر کے کنارے واقع تھی۔ جبکہ وہ (بنی اسرائیل) ہفتہ کے دن خدا کی مقرر کردہ حد سے باہر ہو جاتے تھے۔ جبکہ ہفتہ کے دن مچھلیاں ابھر ابھر کر سطح آب پر تیرتی ہوئی آجاتی تھیں اور جس دن ہفتہ نہیں ہوتا ہے (باقی دنوں میں) تو نہیں آتی تھیں۔ ان کی نافرمانی کی وجہ سے جو وہ کیا کرتے تھے اس طرح ہم ان کی آزمائش کرتے تھے۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

And when a community among them said: Why preach ye to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom, they said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil). - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When a group of them said, [Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy, or punish with a severe punishment?] They said, [As an excuse before your Lord, and [with the hope] that they may be Godwary.] - Qarai, Ali Quli

When a group of them questioned another group saying, [Why do you preach to those whom God has decided to destroy or punish by a severe torment?] they replied, [We preach to them for we are responsible in the sight of your Lord and so that perhaps they may have fear of God.] - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when a party of them said: Why do you admonish a with a severe chastisement? They said: To be free from blame before your Lord, and that haply they may guard (against evil). - Shakir, Habib

When some of them asked, [Why do you admonish a people whom God is going to destroy or to afflict with a severe punishment?] They answered, [In order to be free from blame before your Lord, and that they may perhaps fear Him.] - Wahiduddin Khan

اور جب ان کی ایک جماعت نے مصلحین سے کہا کہ تم کیوں ایسی قوم کو نصیحت کرتے ہو جسے اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا اس پرشدید عذاب کرنے والا ہے تو انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم پروردگار کی بارگاہ میں عذرچاہتے ہیں اور شاید یہ لوگ متقی بن ہی جائیں - Jawadi, Zeeshan

اور انہیں یہ بھی یاد لاؤ کہ جب اُن میں سے ایک گروہ نے دوسرے گروہ سے کہا تھا کہ ——تم ایسے لوگوں کو کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا یا سخت سزا دینے والا ہے —— تو انہوں نے جواب دیا تھا کہ ——ہم یہ سب کچھ تمہارے رب کے حضور اپنی معذرت پیش کرنے کے لیے کرتے ہیں اور اس امید پر کرتے ہیں کہ شاید یہ لوگ اس کی نافرمانی سے پرہیز کرنے لگیں—— - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور جب ان میں سے ایک گروہ نے کہا کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو ان لوگوں کو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا انہیں سخت عذاب دینے والا، بولے تمہارے رب کے حضور معذرت کو اور شاید انہیں ڈر ہو - Ahmed Raza

اور (اس وقت کو یاد کرو) جب ان میں سے ایک گروہ نے کہا (ان لوگوں سے جو ہفتہ کے دن شکار کرنے والوں کو وعظ و نصیحت کرتے تھے) کہ تم ایسے لوگوں کو (بے فائدہ) کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو۔ جن کو خدا ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا سخت عذاب میں مبتلا کرنے والا ہے؟ انہوں نے (جواب میں) کہا کہ ہم یہ اس لیے کرتے ہیں کہ تمہارے پروردگار کے سامنے معذرت پیش کر سکیں (کہ ہم نے اپنا فریضۂ امر و نہی ادا کر دیا ہے) اور اس لئے کہ شاید یہ لوگ اس روش سے پرہیز اختیار کریں۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنجَيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلسُّوٓءِ وَأَخَذْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍۭ بَـِٔيسٍۭ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And when they forgot that whereof they had been reminded, We rescued those who forbade wrong, and visited those who did wrong with dreadful punishment because they were evil-livers. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We delivered those who forbade evil [conduct] and seized the wrongdoers with a terrible punishment because of the transgressions they used to commit. - Qarai, Ali Quli

When they (the unjust people) forgot what was preached to them, We saved the preachers from evil and afflicted the unjust for their evil deeds, with a dreadful torment. - Sarwar, Muhammad

So when they neglected what they had been reminded of, We delivered those who forbade evil and We overtook those who were unjust with an evil chastisement because they transgressed. - Shakir, Habib

Therefore when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who had tried to prevent the doing of evil. And We meted out a severe punishment to the transgressors because they were rebellious. - Wahiduddin Khan

So when they took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said unto them: Be ye apes despised and loathed! - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When they defied [the command pertaining to] what they were forbidden from, We said to them, [Be you spurned apes.] - Qarai, Ali Quli

When they crossed the limit of the prohibition, We made them turn into detested apes. - Sarwar, Muhammad

Therefore when they revoltingly persisted in what they had been forbidden, We said to them: Be (as) apes, despised and hated. - Shakir, Habib

وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَيَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مَن يَسُومُهُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِيعُ ٱلْعِقَابِ ۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And (remember) when thy Lord proclaimed that He would raise against them till the Day of Resurrection those who would lay on them a cruel torment. Lo! verily thy Lord is swift in prosecution and lo! verily He is Forgiving, Merciful. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

And when your Lord proclaimed that He would surely send against them, until the Day of Resurrection, those who would inflict on them a terrible punishment. Indeed your Lord is swift in retribution, and indeed, He is all-forgiving, all-merciful. - Qarai, Ali Quli

(Muhammad), consider, when your Lord declared to the (Israelites) His decision to raise a people above them who would make them suffer the worst kinds of torments until the Day of Judgment. Certainly your Lord's retribution is swift. He is All-forgiving and All-merciful. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when your Lord announced that He would certainly send against them to the day of resurrection those who would subject them to severe torment; most surely your Lord is quick to requite (evil) and most surely He is Forgiving, Merciful. - Shakir, Habib

Then your Lord declared that, until the Day of Resurrection, He would send others against them to inflict terrible suffering on them. Your Lord is swift in retribution; yet surely He is most forgiving and merciful. - Wahiduddin Khan

اور اس وقت کو یاد کرو جب تمھارے پروردگار نے علی الاعلان کہہ دیا کہ قیامت تک ان پر ایسے افراد مسلّط کئے جائیں گے جو انھیں بدترین سختیوں میں مبتلا کریں گے کہ تمھارا پروردگار جلدی عذاب کرنے والا بھی ہے اور بہت زیادہ بخشنے والا مہربان بھی ہے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

اور یاد کرو جبکہ تمہارے رب نے اعلان کر دیا کہ ——وہ قیامت تک برابر ایسے لوگ بنی اسرائیل پر مسلط کرتا رہے گا جو ان کو بدترین عذاب دیں گے،—— یقیناً تمہارا رب سزا دینے میں تیز دست ہے اور یقیناً وہ در گزر اور رحم سے بھی کام لینے والا ہے - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور جب تمہارے رب نے حکم سنادیا کہ ضرور قیامت کے دن تک ان پر ایسے کو بھیجتا رہوں گا جو انہیں بری مار چکھائے بیشک تمہارا رب ضرور جلد عذاب والا ہے اور بیشک وہ بخشنے والا مہربان ہے - Ahmed Raza

اور (اے پیغمبر(ص)) یاد کرو جب تمہارے پروردگار نے اعلان کر دیا تھا (کہ اگر یہ لوگ اپنی سیاہ کاریوں سے باز نہ آئے) تو خدا ان پر قیامت تک ایسے لوگ مسلط کرے گا جو انہیں بدترین عذاب میں گرفتار کریں گے یقینا تمہارا پروردگار بہت جلد سزا دینے والا ہے اور بڑا بخشنے والا اور بڑا رحم کرنے والا بھی ہے۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

وَقَطَّعْنَٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أُمَمًۭا ۖ مِّنْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنْهُمْ دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَبَلَوْنَٰهُم بِٱلْحَسَنَٰتِ وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And We have sundered them in the earth as (separate) nations. Some of them are righteous, and some far from that. And We have tried them with good things and evil things that haply they might return. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌۭ وَرِثُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَٰذَا ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌۭ مِّثْلُهُۥ يَأْخُذُوهُ ۚ أَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِم مِّيثَٰقُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ ۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And a generation hath succeeded them who inherited the scriptures. They grasp the goods of this low life (as the price of evil-doing) and say: It will be forgiven us. And if there came to them (again) the offer of the like, they would accept it (and would sin again). Hath not the covenant of the Scripture been taken on their behalf that they should not speak aught concerning Allah save the truth? And they have studied that which is therein. And the abode of the Hereafter is better, for those who ward off (evil). Have ye then no sense? - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Then they were succeeded by an evil posterity, which inherited the Book: they grab the transitory gains of this lower world, and say, [It will be forgiven us.] And if similar transitory gains were to come their way, they would grab them too. Was not the covenant of the Book taken with them that they shall not attribute anything to Allah except the truth? They have studied what is in it, and [know that] the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are Godwary. Do you not exercise your reason? - Qarai, Ali Quli

Their descendants who inherited the Book gained (by bribery only) worthless things from the worldly life saying, [We shall be forgiven (for what we have done). They would have even doubled such gains if they could have received more. Did they not make a covenant (with God) in the Book not to speak any thing other than the Truth about God and to study its contents well? The life hereafter is much better for the pious ones. Will you not then think? - Sarwar, Muhammad

Then there came after them an evil posterity who inherited the Book, taking only the frail good of this low life and saying: It will be forgiven us. And if the like good came to them, they would take it (too). Was not a promise taken from them in the Book that they would not speak anything about Allah but the truth, and they have read what is in it; and the abode of the hereafter is better for those who guard (against evil). Do you not then understand? - Shakir, Habib

They were succeeded by generations who inherited the Scripture and took to the fleeting gains of this world, saying, [We shall certainly be forgiven.] If there came to them similar fleeting gains again, they would take them. Was a pledge not taken from them, written in the Scripture, that they would not say anything but the truth about God? And they have studied whatever is in it. Surely the Home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Him. Will you not understand? - Wahiduddin Khan

اس کے بعد ان میں ایک نسل پیدا ہوئی جو کتاب کی وراث تو بنی لیکن دنیا کا ہر مال لیتی رہی اور یہ کہتی رہی کہ عنقریب ہمیں بخش دیا جائے گا اور پھر ویسا ہی مال مل گیا تو پھر لے لیا تو کیا ان سے کتاب کا عہد نہیں لیا گیا کہ خبردار خدا کے بارے میں حق کے علاوہ کچھ نہ کہیں اور انہوں نے کتاب کو پڑھا بھی ہے اور دار آخرت ہی صاحبان هتقویٰ کے لئے بہترین ہے کیا تمھاری سمجھ میں نہیں آتا ہے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

پھر اگلی نسلوں کے بعد ایسے نا خلف لوگ ان کے جانشین ہوئے جو کتاب الٰہی کے وارث ہو کر اِسی دنیائے دنی کے فائدے سمیٹتے ہیں اور کہہ دیتے ہیں کہ توقع ہے ہمیں معاف کر دیا جائے گا، اور اگر وہی متاع دنیا پھر سامنے آتی ہے تو پھر لپک کر اسے لے لیتے ہیں کیا ان سے کتاب کا عہد نہیں لیا جا چکا ہے کہ اللہ کے نام پر وہی بات کہیں جو حق ہو؟ اور یہ خود پڑھ چکے ہیں جو کتاب میں لکھا ہے آخرت کی قیام گاہ تو خدا ترس لوگوں کے لیے ہی بہتر ہے، کیا تم اتنی سی بات نہیں سمجھتے؟ - Maududi, Abul A'ala

پھر ان کی جگہ ان کے بعد وہ ناخلف آئے کہ کتاب کے وارث ہوئے اس دنیا کا مال لیتے ہیں اور کہتے اب ہماری بخشش ہوگی اور اگر ویسا ہی مال ان کے پاس اور آئے تو لے لیں کیا ان پر کتاب میں عہد نہ لیا گیا کہ اللہ کی طرف نسبت نہ کریں مگر حق اور انہوں نے اسے پڑھا اور بیشک پچھلا گھر بہتر ہے پرہیزگاروں کو تو کیا تمہیں عقل نہیں، - Ahmed Raza

پھر ان کے بعد ایسے ناخلف لوگ ان کے جانشین ہوئے اور کتابِ الٰہی کے وارث بنے جو (دین فروشی کرکے) دنیائے دوں کے مال و متاع اور ساز و سامان جمع کرتے اور سمیٹتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں کہ امید ہے کہ ہم بخش دیے جائیں گے اور اگر اتنا ہی اور عارضی ساز و سامان ان کے ہاتھ لگ جائے تو اسے بھی بے دریغ لے لیتے ہیں۔ کیا ان سے کتاب (توراۃ) والا یہ عہد و پیمان نہیں لیا گیا تھا کہ وہ اللہ کی نسبت حق کے سوا اور کوئی بات نہیں کہیں گے؟ اور یہ خود کتاب میں پڑھ چکے ہیں جو اس میں لکھا ہے اور آخرت والا گھر پرہیزگاروں کے لیے بہتر ہے کیا تم عقل سے کام نہیں لیتے؟ - Najafi, Muhammad

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And as for those who make (men) keep the Scripture, and establish worship - lo! We squander not the wages of reformers. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

As for those who hold fast to the Book and maintain the prayer—indeed, We do not waste the reward of those who bring about reform. - Qarai, Ali Quli

Those who devote themselves to the teachings of the Book and are steadfast in prayer (should know that) the reward of those who reform themselves will not be lost. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And (as for) those who hold fast by the Book and keep up prayer, surely We do not waste the reward of the right doers. - Shakir, Habib

As for those who hold fast to the Book and are steadfast in prayer, We shall not deny the righteous their reward. - Wahiduddin Khan

وَإِذْ نَتَقْنَا ٱلْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُۥ ظُلَّةٌۭ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍۢ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And when We shook the Mount above them as it were a covering, and they supposed that it was going to fall upon them (and We said): Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein, that ye may ward off (evil). - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When We plucked the mountain [and held it] above them as if it were a canopy (and they thought it was about to fall on them): [Hold on with power to what We have given you and remember that which is in it, so that you may be Godwary.] - Qarai, Ali Quli

When We raised the mount above them as a shadow and made it speak to them, they thought that it would fall on them. We told them to devote themselves decisively to what was given to them and follow its guidance so that they would have fear of God. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when We shook the mountain over them as if it were a covering overhead, and they thought that it was going to fall down upon them: Take hold of what We have given you with firmness, and be mindful of what is in it, so that you may guard (against evil). - Shakir, Habib

When We suspended the mountain over them as if it were a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall down on them, We said, [Hold on firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it, so that you may remain conscious of God.] - Wahiduddin Khan

اور اس وقت کو یاد دلِاؤ جب ہم نے پہاڑ کو ایک سائبان کی طرح ان کے سروں پر معلّق کردیا اور انہوں نے گمان کرلیا کہ یہ اب گرنے والا ہے تو ہم نے کہا کہ توریت کو مضبوطی کے ساتھ پکڑو اور جو کچھ اس میں ہے اسے یاد کرو شاید اس طرح متقی اور پرہیزگار بن جاؤ - Jawadi, Zeeshan

انہیں وہ وقت بھی کچھ یاد ہے جبکہ ہم نے پہاڑ کو ہلا کر ان پر اس طرح چھا دیا تھا کہ گویا وہ چھتری ہے اور یہ گمان کر رہے تھے کہ وہ ان پر آ پڑے گا اور اُس وقت ہم نے ان سے کہا تھا کہ جو کتاب ہم تمہیں دے رہے ہیں اسے مضبوطی کے ساتھ تھامو اور جو کچھ اس میں لکھا ہے اسے یاد رکھو، توقع ہے کہ تم غلط روی سے بچے رہو گے - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور جب ہم نے پہاڑ ان پر اٹھایا گویا وہ سائبان ہے اور سمجھے کہ وہ ان پر گر پڑے گا تو جو ہم نے تمہیں دیا زور سے اور یاد کرو جو اس میں ہے کہ کہیں تم پرہیزگار ہو، - Ahmed Raza

اور (وہ وقت یاد کرو) جب ہم نے پہاڑ کو ہلا کر (اور جڑ سے اکھاڑ کر)۔ اس طرح ان کے اوپر بلند کیا۔ کہ گویا سائبان ہے اور انہوں نے گمان کیا کہ یہ ان پر گرا ہی چاہتا ہے ( اور ان سے کہا کہ) جو کچھ (کتاب) ہم نے تمہیں عطا کی ہے اسے مضبوطی کے ساتھ لو۔ اور جو کچھ اس میں لکھا ہے اسے یاد رکھو۔ تاکہ تم پرہیزگار بن جاؤ۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

And (remember) when thy Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their reins, their seed, and made them testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yea, verily. We testify. (That was) lest ye should say at the Day of Resurrection: Lo! of this we were unaware; - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants and made them bear witness over themselves, [He said to them,] [Am I not your Lord?] They said, [Yes indeed! We bear witness.] [This,] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, [Indeed we were unaware of this,] - Qarai, Ali Quli

When your Lord asked all the offspring of Adam (before their birth), [Am I not your Lord?] All of them testified and bore witness to their testimony that on the Day of Judgment they would not say, [We were not aware of this (fact),] - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! we bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection: Surely we were heedless of this. - Shakir, Habib

اور اے نبی، لوگوں کو یاد دلاؤ وہ وقت جبکہ تمہارے رب نے بنی آدم کی پشتوں سے ان کی نسل کو نکالا تھا اور انہیں خود ان کے اوپر گواہ بناتے ہوئے پوچھا تھا ——کیا میں تمہارا رب نہیں ہوں؟—— انہوں نے کہا ——ضرور آپ ہی ہمارے رب ہیں، ہم اس پر گواہی دیتے ہیں—— یہ ہم نے اس لیے کیا کہ کہیں تم قیامت کے روز یہ نہ کہہ دو کہ ——ہم تو اس بات سے بے خبر تھے،—— - Maududi, Abul A'ala

Relate to them an account of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he cast them off. Thereupon Satan pursued him, and he became one of the perverse. - Qarai, Ali Quli

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَٰهُ بِهَا وَلَٰكِنَّهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ ۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ۚ ذَّٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا ۚ فَٱقْصُصِ ٱلْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated] [untranslated]

And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Had We wished, We would have surely raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his [base] desires. So his parable is that of a dog: if you make for it, it lolls out its tongue, and if you let it alone, it lolls out its tongue. Such is the parable of the people who deny Our signs. So recount these narratives, so that they may reflect. - Qarai, Ali Quli

Had We wanted, We could have raised him to an exalted position but he clung to his earthly life and followed his own (evil) desires. Such person's bad habits are like those of a lazy dog (in a warm climate) who always has its tongue hanging out whether you chase it away or leave it alone. Such are the people who have called Our revelations mere lies. (Muhammad), tell them such stories so that perhaps they will think. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And if We had pleased, We would certainly have exalted him thereby; but he clung to the earth and followed his low desire, so his parable is as the parable of the dog; if you attack him he lolls out his tongue; and if you leave him alone he lolls out his tongue; this is the parable of the people who reject Our communications; therefore relate the narrative that they may reflect. - Shakir, Habib

if it had been Our will, We could have used these signs to exalt him, but instead he clung to the earth and followed his own desires, he was like a dog that pants whether you chase it away or leave it alone. And those who deny Our revelations - step by step We lead them on from whence they know not. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

As for those who deny Our signs, We will draw them imperceptibly [into ruin], whence they do not know. - Qarai, Ali Quli

We gradually lead those who have called Our revelations mere lies, to destruction. Their destruction will be such that they will not even notice how it seized them. - Sarwar, Muhammad
