فَأَصْبَحَ

مُوسَىٰٓ

إِنَّكَ

فَأَصْبَحَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ خَآئِفًۭا يَتَرَقَّبُ فَإِذَا ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَنصَرَهُۥ بِٱلْأَمْسِ يَسْتَصْرِخُهُۥ ۚ قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّكَ لَغَوِىٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

⦿

And morning found him in the city, fearing, vigilant, when behold! he who had appealed to him the day before cried out to him for help. Moses said unto him: Lo! thou art indeed a mere hothead.

He rose at dawn in the city, fearful and vigilant, when behold, the one who had sought his help the day before, shouted for his help [once again]. Moses said to him, [You are indeed clearly perverse!]

He remained in the city but very afraid and cautious. Suddenly the person who asked him for help the previous day asked him for help again. Moses said, [You are certainly a mischievous person].

And he was in the city, fearing, awaiting, when lo! he who had asked his assistance the day before was crying out to him for aid. Musa said to him: You are most surely one erring manifestly.

The next morning, when he was walking in the city, apprehensive, and watchful, and the man who had sought his help the day before cried out to him again for help. Moses said to him, [You are clearly a misguided man.]

پھر صبح کے وقت موسٰی شہر میں داخل ہوئے تو خوفزدہ اور حالات کی نگرانی کرتے ہوئے کہ اچانک دیکھا کہ جس نے کل مدد کے لئے پکارا تھا وہ پھر فریاد کررہا ہے موسٰی نے کہا کہ یقینا تو کھنَا ہوا گمراہ ہے

دُوسرے روز وہ صبح سویرے ڈرتا اور ہر طرف سے خطرہ بھانپتا ہوا شہر میں جا رہا تھا کہ یکایک کیا دیکھتا ہے کہ وہی شخص جس نے کل اسے مدد کے لیے پکارا تھا آج پھر اسے پکار رہا ہے موسیٰؑ نے کہا ——تُو تو بڑا ہی بہکا ہُوا آدمی ہے——

تو صبح کی، اس شہر میں ڈرتے ہوئے اس انتظار میں کہ کیا ہوتا ہے جبھی دیکھا کہ وہ جس نے کل ان سے مدد چاہی تھی فریاد کررہا ہے موسیٰ نے اس سے فرمایا بیشک تو کھلا گمراہ ہے

پھر موسیٰ نے شہر میں اس حال میں صبح کی کہ وہ خوف زدہ اور منتظر تھا (کہ کیا ہوتا ہے؟) کہ اچانک دیکھا کہ وہی شخص جس نے کل اس سے مدد طلب کی تھی (آج پھر چیخ کر( اس کو مدد کیلئے پکار رہا ہے موسیٰ نے اس سے کہا کہ تو کھلا ہوا بد راہ ہے۔

فَلَمَّآ أَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَبْطِشَ بِٱلَّذِى هُوَ عَدُوٌّۭ لَّهُمَا قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَتُرِيدُ أَن تَقْتُلَنِى كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًۢا بِٱلْأَمْسِ ۖ إِن تُرِيدُ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَ جَبَّارًۭا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا تُرِيدُ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ

⦿

And when he would have fallen upon the man who was an enemy unto them both, he said: O Moses! Wouldst thou kill me as thou didst kill a person yesterday. Thou wouldst be nothing but a tyrant in the land, thou wouldst not be of the reformers.

But when he wanted to strike him who was an enemy of both of them, he said, [Moses, do you want to kill me, just like the one you killed yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not desire to be one who brings about reform.]

When Moses was about to attack their enemy, he said, [Moses, do you want to kill me as you slew a soul the other day? Do you want to become a tyrant in the land, not a reformer?]

So when he desired to seize him who was an enemy to them both, he said: O Musa! do you intend to kill me as you killed a person yesterday? You desire nothing but that you should be a tyrant in the land, and you do not desire to be of those who act aright.

When he wanted to catch the one who was an enemy to them both, the man said, [Moses, do you want to kill me just as you killed a man yesterday? You only want to become a tyrant in the land; you do not want to set things right.]

پھر جب موسٰی نے چاہا کہ اس پر حملہ آور ہوں جو دونوں کا دشمن ہے تو اس نے کہا کہ موسٰی تم اسی طرح مجھے قتل کرنا چاہتے ہو جس طرح تم نے کل ایک بے گناہ کو قتل کیا ہے تم صرف روئے زمین میں سرکش حاکم بن کر رہنا چاہتے ہو اور یہ نہیں چاہتے ہو کہ تمہارا شمار اصلاح کرنے والوں میں ہو

پھر جب موسیٰؑ نے ارادہ کیا کہ دشمن قوم کے آدمی پر حملہ کرے تو وہ پکار اٹھا ——اے موسیٰؑ، کیا آج تو مجھے اُسی طرح قتل کرنے لگا ہے جس طرح کل ایک شخص کو قتل کر چکا ہے، تو اس ملک میں جبّار بن کر رہنا چاہتا ہے، اصلاح نہیں کرنا چاہتا——

تو جب موسیٰ نے چاہا کہ اس پر گرفت کرے جو ان دونوں کا دشمن ہے وہ بولا اے موسیٰ کیا تم مجھے ویسا ہی قتل کرنا چاہتے ہو جیسا تم نے کل ایک شخص کو قتل کردیا، تم تو یہی چاہتے ہو کہ زمین میں سخت گیر بنو اور اصلاح کرنا نہیں چاہتے

پھر جب موسیٰ نے اس شخص پر سخت ہاتھ ڈالنا چاہا جو ان دونوں کا دشمن تھا تو اس نے کہا اے موسیٰ تو (آج) مجھے اسی طرح قتل کرنا چاہتا ہے جس طرح کل ایک شخص کو قتل کیا؟ تو بس یہی چاہتا ہے کہ زمین میں سرکش بن جائے اور یہ نہیں چاہتا کہ اصلاح کرنے والوں میں سے ہو۔

وَجَآءَ رَجُلٌۭ مِّنْ أَقْصَا ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَىٰ قَالَ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّ ٱلْمَلَأَ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَٱخْرُجْ إِنِّى لَكَ مِنَ ٱلنَّٰصِحِينَ

⦿

And a man came from the uttermost part of the city, running. He said: O Moses! Lo! the chiefs take counsel against thee to slay thee; therefor escape. Lo! I am of those who give thee good advice.

There came a man from the city outskirts, hurrying. He said, [Moses! The elite are indeed conspiring to kill you. So leave. I am indeed your well-wisher.]

A man came running from the farthest part of the city saying, [Moses, people are planning to kill you. I sincerely advise you to leave the city.

And a man came running from the remotest part of the city. He said: O Musa! surely the chiefs are consulting together to slay you, therefore depart (at once); surely I am of those who wish well to you.

A man came running from the far side of the city, and said, [Moses, the authorities are conspiring to kill you, so leave the city. I am one of your well-wishers.]

اور ادھر آخ» شہر سے ایک شخص دوڑتا ہوا آیا اور اس نے کہا کہ موسٰی شہر کے بڑے لوگ باہمی مشورہ کررہے ہیں کہ تمہیں قتل کردیں لہذا تم شہر سے باہر نکل جاؤ میں تمہارے لئے نصیحت کرنے والوں میں سے ہوں

اس کے بعد ایک آدمی شہر کے پرلے سِرے سے دَوڑتا ہوا آیا اور بولا ——موسیٰؑ، سرداروں میں تیرے قتل کے مشورے ہو رہے ہیں، یہاں سے نکل جا، میں تیرا خیر خواہ ہوں——

اور شہر کے پرلے کنارے سے ایک شخص دوڑ تا آیا، کہا اے موسیٰ! بیشک دربار والے آپ کے قتل کا مشورہ کررہے ہیں تو نکل جایے میں آپ کا خیر خواہ ہوں

اور شہر کے آخری حصہ سے ایک آدمی دوڑتا ہوا آیا (اور) کہا اے موسیٰ! قوم کے بڑے لوگ تمہارے بارے میں مشورہ کر رہے ہیں کہ تجھے قتل کر دیں۔ (لہٰذا) یہاں سے نکل جا یقیناً میں تیرے خیر خواہوں میں سے ہوں۔

فَخَرَجَ مِنْهَا خَآئِفًۭا يَتَرَقَّبُ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ نَجِّنِى مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

So he escaped from thence, fearing, vigilant. He said: My Lord! Deliver me from the wrongdoing folk.

So he left the city, fearful and vigilant. He said, [My Lord! Deliver me from the wrongdoing lot.]

So he left the city afraid and cautious, saying, [Lord, protect me against the unjust people].

So he went forth therefrom, fearing, awaiting, (and) he said: My Lord! deliver me from the unjust people.

So Moses departed from the city, fearful and vigilant, and prayed, [My Lord, save me from these unjust people.]

تو موسٰی شہر سے باہر نکلے خوفزدہ اور دائیں بائیں دیکھتے ہوئے اور کہا کہ پروردگار مجھے ظالم قوم سے محفوظ رکھنا

یہ خبر سنتے ہی موسیٰؑ ڈرتا اور سہمتا نکل کھڑا ہوا اور اس نے دعا کی کہ ——اے میرے رب، مجھے ظالموں سے بچا——

تو اس شہر سے نکلا ڈرتا ہوا اس انتظار میں کہ اب کیا ہوتا ہے عرض کی، اے میرے رب! مجھے ستمگاروں سے بچالے

چنانچہ موسیٰ وہاں سے خوفزدہ ہوکر نتیجہ کا انتظار کرتا ہوا نکلا (اور) کہا اے میرے پروردگار! مجھے ظالم لوگوں سے نجات عطا فرما۔

And when he turned his face toward Midian, he said: Peradventure my Lord will guide me in the right road.

And when he turned his face toward Midian, he said, [Maybe my Lord will show me the right way.]

When he started his journey to Midian he said, [Perhaps my Lord will show me the right path.]

And when he turned his face towards Madyan, he said: Maybe my Lord will guide me in the right path.

When he made his way towards Midian, he said, [I am sure, my Lord will guide me to the right way.]

اور جب موسٰی نے مدین کا رخ کیا تو کہا کہ عنقریب پروردگار مجھے سیدھے راستہ کی ہدایت کردے گا

(مصر سے نکل کر) جب موسیٰؑ نے مَدیَن کا رُخ کیا تو اُس نے کہا ——اُمید ہے کہ میرا رب مجھے ٹھیک راستے پر ڈال دے گا——

اور جب مدین کی طرف متوجہ ہوا کہا قریب ہے کہ میرا رب مجھے سیدھی راہ بتائے

اور جب موسیٰ نے (مصر سے نکل کر) مدین کا رخ کیا تو کہا امید ہے کہ میرا پروردگار سیدھے راستہ کی طرف میری راہنمائی کرے گا۔

وَلَمَّا وَرَدَ مَآءَ مَدْيَنَ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ أُمَّةًۭ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْقُونَ وَوَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمُ ٱمْرَأَتَيْنِ تَذُودَانِ ۖ قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُمَا ۖ قَالَتَا لَا نَسْقِى حَتَّىٰ يُصْدِرَ ٱلرِّعَآءُ ۖ وَأَبُونَا شَيْخٌۭ كَبِيرٌۭ

And when he came unto the water of Midian he found there a whole tribe of men, watering. And he found apart from them two women keeping back (their flocks). He said: What aileth you? The two said: We cannot give (our flocks) to drink till the shepherds return from the water; and our father is a very old man.

When he arrived at the well of Midian, he found there a throng of people watering [their flocks], and he found, besides them, two women holding back [their flock]. He said, [What is your business?] They said, [We do not water [our flock] until the shepherds have driven out [their flocks], and our father is an aged man.]

When he arrived at the well of Midian, he found some people watering (their sheep) and two women keeping the sheep away from the others. He asked the two women, [What is the matter with you?] They replied, [We cannot water our sheep until all the shepherds have driven away their flocks. Our father is an old man].

And when he came to the water of Madyan, he found on it a group of men watering, and he found besides them two women keeping back (their flocks). He said: What is the matter with you? They said: We cannot water until the shepherds take away (their sheep) from the water, and our father is a very old man.

And when he arrived at the well of Midian, he found around it a group of men watering their flocks, and he saw two women standing apart from them, who were holding back their flocks, so he asked, [What is the matter with you?] They replied, [We cannot draw water until the shepherds take away their sheep. Our father is a very old man.]

اور جب مدین کے چشمہ پروارد ہوئے تو لوگوں کی ایک جماعت کو دیکھا جو جانوروں کو پانی پلارہی تھی اور ان سے الگ دو عورتیں تھیں جو جانوروں کو روکے کھڑی تھیں .موسٰی نے پوچھا کہ تم لوگوں کا کیا مسئلہ ہے ان دونوں نے کہا کہ ہم اس وقت تک پانی نہیں پلاتے ہیں جب تک ساری قوم ہٹ نہ جائے اور ہمارے بابا ایک ضعیف العمر آدمی ہیں

اور جب وہ مَدیَن کے کنوئیں پر پہنچا تو اُس نے دیکھا کہ بہت سے لوگ اپنے جانوروں کو پانی پلا رہے ہیں اور ان سے الگ ایک طرف دو عورتیں اپنے جانوروں کو روک رہی ہیں موسیٰؑ نے اِن عورتوں سے پوچھا ——تمہیں کیا پریشانی ہے؟—— انہوں نے کہا ——ہم اپنے جانوروں کو پانی نہیں پلا سکتیں جب تک یہ چرواہے اپنے جانور نکال کر نہ لے جائیں، اور ہمارے والد ایک بہت بوڑھے آدمی ہیں——

اور جب مدین کے پانی پر آیا وہاں لوگوں کے ایک گروہ کو دیکھا کہ اپنے جانوروں کو پانی پلارہے ہیں، اور ان سے اس طرف دو عورتیں دیکھیں کہ اپنے جانوروں کو روک رہی ہیں موسیٰ نے فرمایا تم دونوں کا کیا حال ہے وہ بولیں ہم پانی نہیں پلاتے جب تک سب چرواہے پلاکر پھیر نہ لے جائیں اور ہمارے باپ بہت بوڑھے ہیں

اور جب وہ مدین کے پانی (کنویں) پر پہنچا تو وہاں لوگوں کا ایک مجمع پایا جو (اپنے مویشیوں کو) پانی پلا رہا ہے اور ان لوگوں سے الگ دو عورتوں کو پایا کہ وہ (اپنے ریوڑ کو) روکے ہوئے کھڑی ہیں۔ موسیٰ نے کہا تمہارا کیا معاملہ ہے؟ ان دونوں نے کہا ہم اس وقت تک (اپنے جانوروں کو) پانی نہیں پلاتیں جب تک (یہ) چرواہے اپنے مویشیوں کو (پانی پلا کر) نہ لے جائیں اور ہمارے والد بہت بوڑھے ہیں۔

فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى لِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ إِلَىَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍۢ فَقِيرٌۭ

So he watered (their flock) for them. Then he turned aside into the shade, and said: My Lord! I am needy of whatever good Thou sendest down for me.

So he watered [their flock] for them. Then he withdrew toward the shade and said, [My Lord! I am indeed in need of any good You may send down to me!]

Moses watered their flocks and then sought shelter under a shadow praying, [Lord, I need the means to preserve (the power) that You have granted me.]

So he watered (their sheep) for them, then went back to the shade and said: My Lord! surely I stand in need of whatever good Thou mayest send down to me.

So Moses watered their flocks for them; and returned into the shade and prayed, [Lord, I am truly in need of whatever blessing You may send down for me,]

موسٰی نے دونوں کے جانوروں کو پانی پلادیا اور پھر ایک سایہ میں آکر پناہ لے لی عرض کی پروردگار یقینا میں اس خیر کا محتاج ہوں جو تو میری طرف بھیج دے

فَجَآءَتْهُ إِحْدَىٰهُمَا تَمْشِى عَلَى ٱسْتِحْيَآءٍۢ قَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبِى يَدْعُوكَ لِيَجْزِيَكَ أَجْرَ مَا سَقَيْتَ لَنَا ۚ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُۥ وَقَصَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَصَصَ قَالَ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ نَجَوْتَ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Then there came unto him one of the two women, walking shyly. She said: Lo! my father biddeth thee, that he may reward thee with a payment for that thou didst water (the flock) for us. Then, when he came unto him and told him the (whole) story, he said: Fear not! Thou hast escaped from the wrongdoing folk.

Then one of the two women approached him, walking bashfully. She said, [Indeed my father invites you to pay you the wages for watering [our flock] for us.] So when he came to him and recounted the story to him, he said, [Do not be afraid. You have been delivered from the wrongdoing lot.]

One of the women, walking bashfully, came to Moses and said, [My father calls you and wants to pay you for your watering our flocks.] When Moses came to the woman's father and told him his whole story, he said, [Do not be afraid. Now you are secure from the unjust people.]

Then one of the two women came to him walking bashfully. She said: My father invites you that he may give you the reward of your having watered for us. So when he came to him and gave to him the account, he said: Fear not, you are secure from the unjust people.

and then one of the two women came walking shyly up to him and said, [My father is asking you to come so that he may reward you for watering our flocks for us.] When Moses came to their father and gave him an account of himself, he said: [Don't be afraid! You have escaped from those wrongdoing people.]

اتنے میں دونوں میں سے ایک لڑکی کمال شرم و حیا کے ساتھ چلتی ہوئی آئی اور اس نے کہا کہ میرے بابا آپ کو بلارہے ہیں کہ آپ کے پانی پلانے کی اجرت دے دیں پھر جو موسٰی ان کے پاس آئے اور اپنا قصّہ بیان کیا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ ڈرو نہیں اب تم ظالم قوم سے نجات پاگئے

(کچھ دیر نہ گزری تھی کہ) ان دونوں عورتوں میں سے ایک شرم و حیا سے چلتی ہوئی اس کے پاس آئی اور کہنے لگی ——میرے والد آپ کو بُلا رہے ہیں تاکہ آپ نے ہمارے جانوروں کو پانی جو پلایا ہے اس کا اجر آپ کو دیں—— موسیٰؑ جب اس کے پاس پہنچا اور اپنا سارا قصہ اسے سُنایا تو اس نے کہا ——کچھ خوف نہ کرو، اب تم ظالموں سے بچ نکلے ہو——

تو ان دونوں میں سے ایک اس کے پاس آئی شرم سے چلتی ہوئی بولی میرا باپ تمہیں بلاتا ہے کہ تمہیں مزدوری دے اس کی جو تم نے ہمارے جانوروں کو پانی پلایا ہے جب موسیٰ اس کے پاس آیا اور اسے باتیں کہہ سنائیں اس نے کہا ڈریے نہیں، آپ بچ گئے ظالموں سے

پس ان دو عورتوں مین سے ایک شرم و حیا کے ساتھ چلتی ہوئی اس کے پاس آئی (اور) کہا میرے والد تمہیں بلاتے ہیں تاکہ تمہیں اس کا معاوضہ دیں جو تم نے ہماری خاطر پانی پلایا تو جب موسیٰ اس کے پاس پہنچا اور اسے سارا اپنا قصہ سنایا تو اس (بزرگ) نے (تسلی دیتے ہوئے) کہا خوف نہ کر اب تم ظالم لوگوں سے نجات پا گئے ہو۔

One of the two women said: O my father! Hire him! For the best (man) that thou canst hire in the strong, the trustworthy.

ان دونوں عورتوں میں سے ایک نے اپنے باپ سے کہا ——ابّا جان، اس شخص کو نوکر رکھ لیجیے، بہترین آدمی جسے آپ ملازم رکھیں وہی ہو سکتا ہے جو مضبُوط اور امانت دار ہو——

قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُنكِحَكَ إِحْدَى ٱبْنَتَىَّ هَٰتَيْنِ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تَأْجُرَنِى ثَمَٰنِىَ حِجَجٍۢ ۖ فَإِنْ أَتْمَمْتَ عَشْرًۭا فَمِنْ عِندِكَ ۖ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَيْكَ ۚ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

⦿

He said: Lo! I fain would marry thee to one of these two daughters of mine on condition that thou hirest thyself to me for (the term of) eight pilgrimages. Then if thou completest ten it will be of thine own accord, for I would not make it hard for thee. Allah willing, thou wilt find me of the righteous.

He said, [Indeed I desire to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine, on condition that you hire yourself to me for eight years. And if you complete ten, that will be up to you, and I do not want to be hard on you. God willing, you will find me to a righteous person.]

He (Shu'ayb) said to (Moses), [I want to give one of my daughters to you in marriage on the condition that you will work for me for eight years, but you may continue for two more years only out of your own accord. I do not want it to become a burden for you. God willing, you will find me a righteous person].

He said: I desire to marry one of these two daughters of mine to you on condition that you should serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be of your own free will, and I do not wish to be hard to you; if Allah please, you will find me one of the good.

The father said, [I would like to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine on the condition that you stay eight years in my service. But if you wish it, you may stay ten. I do not want to impose any hardship on you. God willing, you will find me a fair person.]

انہوں نے کہا کہ میں ان دونوں میں سے ایک بیٹی کا عقد آپ سے کرنا چاہتا ہوں بشرطیکہ آپ آٹھ سال تک میری خدمت کریں پھر اگر دس سال پورے کردیں تو یہ آپ کی طرف سے ہوگا اور میں آپ کو کوئی زحمت نہیں دینا چاہتا ہوں انشائ اللہ آپ مجھے نیک بندوں میں سے پائیں گے

اس کے باپ نے (موسیٰؑ سے) کہا ——میں چاہتا ہوں کہ اپنی اِن دو بیٹیوں میں سے ایک کا نکاح تمہارے ساتھ کر دوں بشرطیکہ تم آٹھ سال تک میرے ہاں ملازمت کرو، اور اگر دس سال پُورے کر دو تو یہ تمہاری مرضی ہے میں تم پر سختی نہیں کرنا چاہتا تم اِن شاءاللہ مجھے نیک آدمی پاؤ گے——

کہا میں چاہتا ہوں کہ اپنی دونوں بیٹیوں میں سے ایک تمہیں بیاہ دوں اس مہر پر کہ تم آٹھ برس میری ملازمت کرو پھر اگر پورے دس برس کرلو تو تمہاری طرف سے ہے اور میں تمہیں مشقت میں ڈالنا نہیں چاہتا قریب ہے انشاء اللہ تم مجھے نیکوں میں پاؤ گے

اس (شعیب) نے (موسیٰ سے) کہا کہ میں چاہتا ہوں کہ اپنی دو بیٹیوں میں سے ایک کا عقد نکاح تمہارے ساتھ اس شرط پر کر دوں کہ تم آٹھ سال تک میری خدمت کرو اور اگر دس سال پورے کرو تو یہ تمہاری طرف سے (احسان) ہے اور میں تم پر کوئی سختی نہیں کرنا چاہتا۔ ان شاء اللہ تم مجھے نیکوکار لوگوں میں سے پاؤگے۔

قَالَ ذَٰلِكَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ ۖ أَيَّمَا ٱلْأَجَلَيْنِ قَضَيْتُ فَلَا عُدْوَٰنَ عَلَىَّ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌۭ

⦿

He said: That (is settled) between thee and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no injustice to me, and Allah is Surety over what we say.

He said, [This will be [by consent] between you and me. Whichever of the two terms I complete, there shall be no imposition upon me, and Allah is witness over what we say.]

(Moses) said, [Let it be a binding contract between us and I shall be free to serve for any of the said terms. God will bear witness to our agreement.]

He said: This shall be (an agreement) between me and you; whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there shall be no wrongdoing to me; and Allah is a witness of what we say.

Moses said, [That is agreed between me and you; whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no blame on me. God is witness to what we say.]

موسٰی نے کہا کہ یہ میرے اور آپ کے درمیان کا معاہدہ ہے میں جو مدّت بھی پوری کردوں میرے اوپر کوئی ذمہ داری نہیں ہوگی اور میں جو کچھ بھی کہہ رہاہوں اللہ اس کا گواہ ہے

موسیٰ نے جواب دیا ——یہ بات میرے اور آپ کے درمیان طے ہو گئی ان دونوں مدتوں میں سے جو بھی میں پُوری کر دوں اُس کے بعد پھر کوئی زیادتی مجھ پر نہ ہو، اور جو کچھ قول قرار ہم کر رہے ہیں اللہ اس پر نگہبان ہے——

موسیٰ نے کہا یہ میرے اور آپ کے درمیان اقرار ہوچکا، میں ان دونوں میں جو میعاد پوری کردوں تو مجھ پر کوئی مطالبہ نہیں، اور ہمارے اس کہے پر اللہ کا ذمہ ہے

موسیٰ نے کہا (اچھا) یہ بات میرے اور آپ کے درمیان طے ہوگئی۔ ان دونوں میں سے میں جو مدت بھی پوری کر دوں (اس کے بعد) مجھ پر کوئی زیادتی نہ ہوگی اور ہم جو کچھ کہہ رہے ہیں اللہ اس پر نگہبان ہے۔

فَلَمَّا قَضَىٰ مُوسَى ٱلْأَجَلَ وَسَارَ بِأَهْلِهِۦٓ ءَانَسَ مِن جَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ نَارًۭا قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ ٱمْكُثُوٓا۟ إِنِّىٓ ءَانَسْتُ نَارًۭا لَّعَلِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم مِّنْهَا بِخَبَرٍ أَوْ جَذْوَةٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَصْطَلُونَ

Then, when Moses had fulfilled the term, and was travelling with his housefolk, he saw in the distance a fire and said unto his housefolk: Bide ye (here). Lo! I see in the distance a fire; peradventure I shall bring you tidings thence, or a brand from the fire that ye may warm yourselves.

So when Moses completed the term and set out with his family, he descried a fire on the side of the mountain. He said to his family, [Wait! Indeed, I descry a fire! Maybe I will bring you some news from it, or a brand of fire so that you may warm yourselves.]

When Moses completed the term of the contract and departed from his employer with his family, he saw a fire (on his way) on one side of the Mount (Sinai). He asked his wife, [Stay here. I can see some fire. Perhaps I will be able to bring some news of it or some fire for you to warm-up yourselves.]

So when Musa had fulfilled the term, and he journeyed with his family, he perceived on this side of the mountain a fire. He said to his family: Wait, I have seen a fire, maybe I will bring to you from it some news or a brand of fire, so that you may warm yourselves.

When Moses completed the term and set out with his family, he noticed a fire in the direction of Mount Tur. He said to his family: [Stay here, I can see a fire. Perhaps I can bring you news, or a burning brand from the fire with which you may warm yourself.]

پھر جب موسٰی مدّت کو پورا کرچکے اور اپنے اہل کو لے کر چلے تو طور کی طرف سے ایک آگ نظر آئی انہوں نے اپنے اہل سے کہا کہ تم لوگ ٹھہرو میں نے ایک آگ دیکھی ہے شاید اس میں سے کوئی خبر لے آؤں یا کوئی چنگاری ہی لے آؤں کہ تم لوگ اس سے تاپنے کا کام لے سکو

جب موسیٰؑ نے مدت پوری کر دی اور وہ اپنے اہل و عیال کو لے کر چلا تو طُور کی جانب اس کو ایک آگ نظر آئی اُس نے اپنے گھر والوں سے کہا ——ٹھیرو، میں نے ایک آگ دیکھی ہے، شاید میں وہاں سے کوئی خبر لے آؤں یا اس آگ سے کوئی انگارہ ہی اُٹھا لاؤں جس سے تم تاپ سکو——

پھر جب موسیٰ نے اپنی میعاد پوری کردی اور اپنی بی بی کو لے کر چلا طُور کی طرف سے ایک آگ دیکھی اپنی گھر والی سے کہا تم ٹھہرو مجھے طُور کی طرف سے ایک آگ نظر پڑی ہے شاید میں وہاں سے کچھ خبر لاؤ ں یا تمہارے لیے کوئی آ گ کی چنگاری لاؤں کہ تم تاپو،

پھر جب موسیٰ نے (مقررہ) مدت پوری کر دی اور اپنے اہل و (عیال) کو ساتھ لے کر مصر روانہ ہوئے تو طور کی جانب سے آگ محسوس کی تو گھر والوں سے کہا کہ تم ٹھہرو میں نے آگ محسوس کی ہے شاید میں تمہارے پاس (وہاں سے) کوئی خبر لاؤں یا آگ کا کوئی انگارہ لاؤں تاکہ تم تاپو۔

فَلَمَّآ أَتَىٰهَا نُودِىَ مِن شَٰطِئِ ٱلْوَادِ ٱلْأَيْمَنِ فِى ٱلْبُقْعَةِ ٱلْمُبَٰرَكَةِ مِنَ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ أَن يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

And when he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed field, from the tree: O Moses! Lo! I, even I, am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds;

When he approached it, he was called from the right bank of the valley in that blessed site from the tree: [Moses! Indeed I am Allah, the Lord of all the worlds!]

وَأَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهَا تَهْتَزُّ كَأَنَّهَا جَآنٌّۭ وَلَّىٰ مُدْبِرًۭا وَلَمْ يُعَقِّبْ ۚ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ أَقْبِلْ وَلَا تَخَفْ ۖ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْـَٔامِنِينَ

Throw down thy staff. And when he saw it writhing as it had been a demon, he turned to flee headlong, (and it was said unto him): O Moses! Draw nigh and fear not. Lo! thou art of those who are secure.

And: [Throw down your staff!] And when he saw it wriggling as if it were a snake, he turned his back [to flee], without looking back. [Moses! Come forward, and do not be afraid. Indeed you are safe.]

Throw down your staff.] When Moses saw his staff moving on the ground like a living being he fled with no desire to step forward. He was told, [Moses, step forward. Do not be afraid; you will be safe and secure.

And saying: Cast down you staff. So when he saw it in motion as if it were a serpent, he turned back retreating, and did not return. O Musa! come forward and fear not; surely you are of those who are secure;

اور تم اپنے عصا کو زمین پر ڈال دو اور جو موسٰی نے دیکھا تو وہ سانپ کی طرح لہرا رہا تھا یہ دیکھ کر موسٰی پیچھے ہٹ گئے اور پھر مڑ کر بھی نہ دیکھا تو پھر آواز آئی کہ موسٰی آگے بڑھو اور ڈرو نہیں کہ تم بالکل مامون و محفوظ ہو

اور (حکم دیا گیا کہ) پھینک دے اپنی لاٹھی جونہی کہ موسیٰؑ نے دیکھا کہ وہ لاٹھی سانپ کی طرح بل کھا رہی ہے تو وہ پیٹھ پھیر کر بھاگا اور اس نے مڑ کر بھی نہ دیکھا (ارشاد ہوا) ——موسیٰؑ، پلٹ آ اور خوف نہ کر، تو بالکل محفوظ ہے

اور یہ کہ ڈال دے اپنا عصا پھر جب موسیٰ نے اسے دیکھا لہراتا ہوا گویا سانپ ہے پیٹھ پھیر کر چلا اور مڑ کر نہ دیکھا اے موسیٰ سامنے آ اور ڈر نہیں، بیشک تجھے امان ہے

اور یہ کہ تم اپنا عصا پھینک دو تو جب اسے دیکھا کہ اس طرح حرکت کر رہا ہے جیسے وہ سانپ ہے تو وہ منہ موڑ کر الٹے مڑے اور پیچھے مڑ کر بھی نہ دیکھا (آواز آئی) اے موسیٰ! آگے آؤ۔ اور ڈرو نہیں تم (ہر طرح) امن میں ہو۔

ٱسْلُكْ يَدَكَ فِى جَيْبِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَآءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوٓءٍۢ وَٱضْمُمْ إِلَيْكَ جَنَاحَكَ مِنَ ٱلرَّهْبِ ۖ فَذَٰنِكَ بُرْهَٰنَانِ مِن رَّبِّكَ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًۭا فَٰسِقِينَ

⦿

Thrust thy hand into the bosom of thy robe it will come forth white without hurt. And guard thy heart from fear. Then these shall be two proofs from your Lord unto Pharaoh and his chiefs. Lo! they are evil-living folk.

[Insert your hand into your shirt. It will emerge white, without any fault, and keep your arms drawn in awe to your sides. These shall be two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his elite. They are indeed a transgressing lot.]

Place your hand in your pocket; it will come out sheer white but not sick. Be humble for fear of God and show these two miracles of your Lord to the Pharaoh and his officials; they are an evil-doing people.]

Enter your hand into the opening of your bosom, it will come forth white without evil, and draw your hand to yourself to ward off fear: so these two shall be two arguments from your Lord to Firon and his chiefs, surely they are a transgressing people.

اپنا ہاتھ گریبان میں ڈال، چمکتا ہوا نکلے گا بغیر کسی تکلیف کے اور خوف سے بچنے کے لیے اپنا بازو بھینچ لے یہ دو روشن نشانیاں ہیں تیرے رب کی طرف سے فرعون اور اس کے درباریوں کے سامنے پیش کرنے کے لیے، وہ بڑے ہی نافرمان لوگ ہیں——

اپنا ہاتھ گریبان میں ڈال نکلے گا سفید چمکتا بے عیب اور اپنا ہاتھ سینے پر رکھ لے خوف دور کرنے کو تو یہ دو حُجتیں ہیں تیرے رب کی فرعون اور اس کے درباریوں کی طرف، بیشک وہ بے حکم لوگ ہیں،

(اور) اپنا ہاتھ اپنے گریبان میں ڈالو وہ بغیر کسی تکلیف (اور بیماری) کے سفید چمکتا ہوا نکلے گا اور رفع خوف کیلئے اپنا بازو اپنی طرف سمیٹ لو یہ تمہارے پروردگار کی طرف سے دو نشانیاں ہیں فرعون اور اس کے سرداروں کے سامنے پیش کرنے کیلئے۔ بیشک وہ (بڑے) نافرمان لوگ ہیں۔

My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech. Therefor send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Lo! I fear that they will give the lie to me.

قَالَ سَنَشُدُّ عَضُدَكَ بِأَخِيكَ وَنَجْعَلُ لَكُمَا سُلْطَٰنًۭا فَلَا يَصِلُونَ إِلَيْكُمَا ۚ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ أَنتُمَا وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكُمَا ٱلْغَٰلِبُونَ

He said: We will strengthen thine arm with thy brother, and We will give unto you both power so that they cannot reach you for Our portents. Ye twain, and those who follow you, will be the winners.

He said, [We will strengthen your arm by means of your brother, and invest both of you with such authority that they will not touch you. With the help of Our signs, you two, and those who follow the two of you, shall be the victors.]

The Lord said, [We will support you by your brother and will grant you such prestige that no one will dare to approach anyone of you. By the help of Our miracles both you and your follower will certainly triumph.]

He said: We will strengthen your arm with your brother, and We will give you both an authority, so that they shall not reach you; (go) with Our signs; you two and those who follow you shall be uppermost.

ارشاد ہوا کہ ہم تمہارے بازؤں کو تمہارے بھائی سے مضبوط کردیں گے اور تمہارے لئے ایسا غلبہ قرار دیں گے کہ یہ لوگ تم تک پہنچ ہی نہ سکیں اور ہماری نشانیوں کے سہارے تم اور تمہارے پیروکار ہی غالب رہیں گے

فرمایا ——ہم تیرے بھائی کے ذریعہ سے تیرا ہاتھ مضبوط کریں گے اور تم دونوں کو ایسی سطوت بخشیں گے کہ وہ تمہارا کچھ نہ بگاڑ سکیں گے ہماری نشانیوں کے زور سے غلبہ تمہارا اور تمہارے پیروؤں کا ہی ہو گا——

فرمایا، قریب ہے کہ ہم تیرے بازو کو تیرے بھائی سے قوت دیں گے اور تم دونوں کو غلبہ عطا فرمائیں گے تو وہ تم دونوں کا کچھ نقصان نہ کرسکیں گے، ہماری نشانیوں کے سبب تم دونوں اور جو تمہاری پیروی کریں گے غالب آؤ گے

ارشاد ہوا: ہم تمہارے بازو کو تمہارے بھائی کے ذریعہ سے مضبوط کریں گے اور ہم تم دونوں کو غلبہ عطا کریں گے کہ وہ تم تک پہنچ بھی نہیں سکیں گے۔ ہماری نشانیوں کی برکت سے تم اور تمہارے پیروکار ہی غالب آئیں گے۔

فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ قَالُوا۟ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ مُّفْتَرًۭى وَمَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَٰذَا فِىٓ ءَابَآئِنَا ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

But when Moses came unto them with Our clear tokens, they said: This is naught but invented magic. We never heard of this among our fathers of old.

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن جَآءَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ مِنْ عِندِهِۦ وَمَن تَكُونُ لَهُۥ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلدَّارِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

And Moses said: My Lord is Best Aware of him who bringeth guidance from His presence, and whose will be the sequel of the Home (of bliss). Lo! wrong-doers will not be successful.

Moses said, [My Lord knows best who brings guidance from Him, and in whose favour the outcome of that abode will be. The wrongdoers will not be felicitous.]

موسیٰؑ نے جواب دیا ——میرا رب اُس شخص کے حال سے خوب واقف ہے جو اس کی طرف سے ہدایت لے کر آیا ہے اور وہی بہتر جانتا ہے کہ آخری انجام کس کا اچھا ہونا ہے، حق یہ ہے کہ ظالم کبھی فلاح نہیں پاتے——

وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَأُ مَا عَلِمْتُ لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرِى فَأَوْقِدْ لِى يَٰهَٰمَٰنُ عَلَى ٱلطِّينِ فَٱجْعَل لِّى صَرْحًۭا لَّعَلِّىٓ أَطَّلِعُ إِلَىٰٓ إِلَٰهِ مُوسَىٰ وَإِنِّى لَأَظُنُّهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ

⦿

And Pharaoh said: O chiefs! I know not that ye have a god other than me, so kindle for me (a fire), O Haman, to bake the mud; and set up for me a lofty tower in order that I may survey the god of Moses; and lo! I deem him of the liars.

Pharaoh said, [O [members of the] elite! I do not know of any god that you may have besides me. Haman, light for me a fire over clay, and build me a tower so that I may take a look at Moses] god, and indeed I consider him to be a liar!]

The Pharaoh said, [My people, I know no one who could be your lord besides myself. Haman, construct for me a tower of baked bricks so that I may climb on it and see the God of Moses; I think he is a liar.]

And Firon said: O chiefs! I do not know of any god for you besides myself; therefore kindle a fire for me, O Haman, for brick, then prepare for me a lofty building so that I may obtain knowledge of Musa's god, and most surely I think him to be one of the liars.

Pharaoh said, [O nobles, I know of no god for you other than myself. So, Haman, burn me bricks of clay, and build me a high tower, so that I may have a look at the God of Moses, though I consider him to be one of the liars.]

اور فرعون نے کہا کہ میرے زعما ئ مملکت! میرے علم میں تمہارے لئے میرے علاوہ کوئی خدا نہیں ہے لہٰذا ہامان! تم میرے لئے مٹی کا پجاوا لگاؤ اور پھر ایک قلعہ تیار کرو کہ میں اس پر چڑھ کر موسٰی کے خدا کی خبر لے آؤں اور میرا خیال تو یہ ہی ہے کہ موسٰی جھوٹے ہیں

اور فرعون نے کہا ——اے اہل دربار میں تو اپنے سوا تمہارے کسی خدا کو نہیں جانتا ہامان، ذرا اینٹیں پکوا کر میرے لیے ایک اونچی عمارت تو بنوا، شاید کہ اس پر چڑھ کر میں موسیٰؑ کے خدا کو دیکھ سکوں، میں تو اسے جھُوٹا سمجھتا ہوں——

اور فرعون بولا، اے درباریو! میں تمہارے لیے اپنے سوا کوئی خدا نہیں جانتا تو اے ہامان! میرے لیے گارا پکا کر ایک محل بنا کہ شاید میں موسیٰ کے خدا کو جھانک آؤں اور بیشک میرے گمان میں تو وہ جھوٹا ہے

اور فرعون نے کہا اے سردارو! میں تو اپنے سوا تمہارے لئے کوئی خدا نہیں جانتا تو اے ہامان! تو میرے لئے مٹی کو آگ میں پکا (مٹی کو کچی اینٹوں کو پکوا) پھر میرے لئے ایک بلند عمارت بنوا۔ تاکہ میں (اس پر چڑھ کر) موسیٰ کے خدا کا کوئی سراغ لگا سکوں اور میں تو اسے (اس دعویٰ میں) جھوٹا ہی خیال کرتا ہوں۔

And he and his hosts were haughty in the land without right, and deemed that they would never be brought back to Us.

Therefor We seized him and his hosts, and abandoned them unto the sea. Behold the nature of the consequence for evil-doers!

And We made them patterns that invite unto the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.

And We made a curse to follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the hateful.

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَآ أَهْلَكْنَا ٱلْقُرُونَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ بَصَآئِرَ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

And We verily gave the Scripture unto Moses after We had destroyed the generations of old: clear testimonies for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy, that haply they might reflect.

And certainly We gave Musa the Book after We had destroyed the former generations, clear arguments for men and a guidance and a mercy, that they may be mindful.

And thou (Muhammad) wast not on the western side (of the Mount) when We expounded unto Moses the commandment, and thou wast not among those present;

وَلَٰكِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَا قُرُونًۭا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْعُمُرُ ۚ وَمَا كُنتَ ثَاوِيًۭا فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا وَلَٰكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ

But We brought forth generations, and their lives dragged on for them. And thou wast not a dweller in Midian, reciting unto them Our revelations, but We kept sending (messengers to men).

But We brought forth other generations and time took its toll on them. You did not dwell among the people of Midian reciting to them Our signs, but it is We who are the senders [of the apostles].

But We raised many generations after Moses and they lived for many years. You did not dwell with the people of Midian reciting Our revelations to them, but We had certainly sent Messengers to them.

But We raised up generations, then life became prolonged to them; and you were not dwelling among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our communications, but We were the senders.

We brought into being many generations who lived long lives, nor did you live among the people of Midian and recite our revelations to them, it is We who send messengers,

لیکن ہم نے بہت سی قوموں کو پیدا کیا پھر ان پر ایک طویل زمانہ گزر گیا اور آپ تو اہل مدین میں بھی مقیم نہیں تھے کہ انہیں ہماری آیتیں پڑھ کر سناتے لیکن ہم رسول بنانے والے توتھے

بلکہ اس کے بعد (تمہارے زمانے تک) ہم بہت سی نسلیں اٹھا چکے ہیں اور ان پر بہت زمانہ گزر چکا ہے تم اہلِ مَدیَن کے درمیان بھی موجود نہ تھے کہ اُن کو ہماری آیات سُنا رہے ہوتے، مگر (اُس وقت کی یہ خبریں) بھیجنے والے ہم ہیں

مگر ہوا یہ کہ ہم نے سنگتیں پیدا کیں کہ ان پر زمانہ دراز گزرا اور نہ تم اہلِ مدین میں مقیم تھے ان پر ہماری آیتیں پڑھتے ہوئے، ہاں ہم رسول بنانے والے ہوئے

وَمَا كُنتَ بِجَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ إِذْ نَادَيْنَا وَلَٰكِن رَّحْمَةًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًۭا مَّآ أَتَىٰهُم مِّن نَّذِيرٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

And thou was not beside the Mount when We did call; but (the knowledge of it is) a mercy from thy Lord that thou mayst warn a folk unto whom no warner came before thee, that haply they may give heed.

And you were not on the side of the Mount when We called out [to Moses], but [We have sent you as] a mercy from your Lord that you may warn a people to whom there did not come any warner before you, so that they may take admonition.

You had not been present at the side of the Mount (Sinai) when We called Moses (from the tree), but through Our mercy we told you his story so that you might warn the people

اور تم طور کے دامن میں بھی اُس وقت موجود نہ تھے جب ہم نے (موسیٰؑ کو پہلی مرتبہ) پکارا تھا، مگر یہ تمہارے رب کی رحمت ہے (کہ تم کو یہ معلومات دی جار ہی ہیں) تاکہ تم اُن لوگوں کو متنبّہ کر دو جن کے پاس تم سے پہلے کوئی متنبّہ کرنے والا نہیں آیا، شاید کہ وہ ہوش میں آئیں

⦿

اور نہ تم طور کے کنارے تھے جب ہم نے ندا فرمائی ہاں تمہارے رب کی مہر ہے (کہ تمہیں غیب کے علم دیے) کہ تم ایسی قوم کو ڈر سناؤ جس کے پاس تم سے پہلے کوئی ڈر سنانے والا نہ آیا یہ امید کرتے ہوئے کہ ان کو نصیحت ہو،

وَلَوْلَآ أَن تُصِيبَهُم مُّصِيبَةٌۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوْلَآ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًۭا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَايَٰتِكَ وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Otherwise, if disaster should afflict them because of that which their own hands have sent before (them), they might say: Our Lord! Why sentest Thou no messenger unto us, that we might have followed Thy revelations and been of the believers?

And lest—if an affliction were to befall them because of what their hands have sent ahead —they should say, [Our Lord! Why did You not send us an apostle so that we might have followed Your signs and been among the faithful?]

to whom no warner had been sent that perhaps they might take heed, and that, on experiencing afflictions because of their own deeds, they may not say, [Lord, would that You had sent to us a Messenger so that we could follow Your revelations and become believers].

And were it not that there should befall them a disaster for what their hands have sent before, then they should say: Our Lord! why didst Thou not send to us an apostle so that we should have followed Thy communications and been of the believers!

(اور یہ ہم نے اس لیے کیا کہ) کہیں ایسا نہ ہو کہ اُن کے اپنے کیے کرتوتوں کی بدولت کوئی مصیبت جب اُن پر آئے تو وہ کہیں ——اے پروردگار، تُو نے کیوں نہ ہماری طرف کوئی رسول بھیجا کہ ہم تیری آیات کی پیروی کرتے اور اہلِ ایمان میں سے ہوتے——

اور اگر نہ ہوتا کہ کبھی پہنچتی انہیں کوئی مصیبت اس کے سبب جو ان کے ہاتھوں نے آگے بھیجا تو کہتے، اے ہمارے رب! تو نے کیوں نہ بھیجا ہماری طرف کوئی رسول کہ ہم تیری آیتوں کی پیروی کرتے اور ایمان لاتے

(اور شاید ہم رسول نہ بھیجتے) اگر یہ بات نہ ہوتی کہ اگر ان کے کرتوتوں کی پاداش میں انہیں کوئی مصیبت پہنچے تو وہ یہ نہ کہنے لگ جائیں کہ اے ہمارے پروردگار تو نے ہماری طرف کوئی رسول کیوں نہ بھیجا تاکہ ہم تیری آیتوں کی پیروی کرتے اور ہم ایمان لانے والوں میں سے ہوتے۔

فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِنْ عِندِنَا قَالُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُوتِىَ مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ قَالُوا۟ سِحْرَانِ تَظَٰهَرَا وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِكُلٍّۢ كَٰفِرُونَ

But when there came unto them the Truth from Our presence, they said: Why is he not given the like of what was given unto Moses? Did they not disbelieve in that which was given unto Moses of old? They say: Two magics that support each other; and they say: Lo! in both we are disbelievers.

But when there came to them the truth from Us, they said, [Why has he not been given the like of what Moses was given?] Did they not disbelieve what Moses was given before, and said, [Two magicians abetting each other,] and said, [Indeed we disbelieve both of them]?

When the Truth from Us came to them they said, [Would that he, (Muhammad), had received what was given to Moses (by his Lord).] Did not they reject what Moses had brought to them saying, [These two, Moses and Aaron, are two magicians who support each other. We do not have any faith in them.]

⦿

But (now) when the truth has come to them from Us, they say: Why is he not given the like of what was given to Musa? What! did they not disbelieve in what Musa was given before? They say: Two magicians backing up each other; and they say: Surely we are unbelievers in all.

But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, [Why has he not been given the like of what Moses was given?] But did they not reject what Moses was given before? They said, [Both [Moses and Muhammad] are kinds of sorcery, each assisting the other.] And they add, [We reject both of them.]

پھر اس کے بعد جب ہماری طرف سے حق آگیا تو کہنے لگے کہ انہیں وہ سب کیوں نہیں دیا گیا ہے جو موسٰی کو دیا گیا تھا تو کیا ان لوگوں نے اس سے پہلے موسٰی کا انکار نہیں کیا اور اب تو کہتے ہیں کہ توریت اور قرآن جادو ہے جو ایک دوسرے کی تائید کرتے ہیں اور ہم دونوں ہی کا انکار کرنے والے ہیں

⦿

مگر جب ہمارے ہاں سے حق ان کے پاس آ گیا تو وہ کہنے لگے ——کیوں نہ دیا گیا اِس کو وہی کچھ جو موسیٰؑ کو دیا گیا تھا؟—— کیا یہ لوگ اُس کا انکار نہیں کر چکے ہیں جو اس سے پہلے موسیٰؑ کو دیا گیا تھا؟ انہوں نے کہا ——دونوں جادوگر ہیں جو ایک دُوسرے کی مدد کرتے ہیں—— اور کہا ——ہم کسی کو نہیں مانتے——

پھر جب ان کے پاس حق آیا ہماری طرف سے بولے انہیں کیوں نہ دیا گیا جو موسیٰ کو دیا گیا کیا اس کے منکر نہ ہوئے تھے جو پہلے موسیٰ کو دیا گیا بولے دو جادو ہیں ایک دوسرے کی پشتی (امداد) پر، اور بولے ہم ان دونوں کے منکر ہیں

جب ہماری طرف سے ان کے پاس حق آگیا (آخری برحق رسول آگیا) تو کہنے لگے اس (رسول) کو وہ کچھ کیوں نہ دیا گیا جو موسیٰ کو دیا گیا تھا کیا انہوں نے اس کا انکار نہیں کیا تھا؟ وہ کہتے ہیں کہ یہ دونوں جادوگر ہیں جو ایک دوسرے کی مدد کرتے ہیں اور کہتے تھے کہ ہم ہر ایک کے منکر ہیں۔

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Then bring a scripture from the presence of Allah that giveth clearer guidance than these two (that) I may follow it, if ye are truthful.

Say, [If you are truthful, bring some Book from Allah better in guidance than the two on them so that I may follow it.]

Say: Then bring some (other) book from Allah which is a better guide than both of them, (that) I may follow it, if you are truthful.

تو آپ کہہ دیجئے کہ اچھا تم پروردگار کی طرف سے کوئی کتاب لے آؤ جو دونوں سے زیادہ صحیح ہو اور میں اس کا اتباع کرلوں اگر تم اپنی بات میں سچے ہو

(اے نبیؐ،) ان سے کہو، ——اچھا تو لاؤ اللہ کی طرف سے کوئی کتاب جو اِن دونوں سے زیادہ ہدایت بخشنے والی ہو اگر تم سچے ہو، میں اسی کی پیروی اختیار کروں گا——

فَإِن لَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَكَ فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ بِغَيْرِ هُدًۭى مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

And if they answer thee not, then know that what they follow is their lusts. And who goeth farther astray than he who followeth his lust without guidance from Allah. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.

Then if they do not respond to you[r] [summons], know that they only follow their desires, and who is more astray than him who follows his desires without any guidance from Allah? Indeed Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

If they cannot meet such a challenge, know that they are only following their (evil) desires. Who strays more than one who follows his desires without guidance from God? God does not guide the unjust people.

But if they do not answer you, then know that they only follow their low desires; and who is more erring than he who follows his low desires without any guidance from Allah? Surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

اب اگر وہ تمہارا یہ مطالبہ پورا نہیں کرتے تو سمجھ لو کہ دراصل یہ اپنی خواہشات کے پیرو ہیں، اور اُس شخص سے بڑھ کر کون گمراہ ہو گا جو خدائی ہدایت کے بغیر بس اپنی خواہشات کی پیروی کرے؟ اللہ ایسے ظالموں کو ہرگز ہدایت نہیں بخشتا

پھر اگر وہ یہ تمہارا فرمانا قبول نہ کریں تو جان لو کہ بس وہ اپنی خواہشو ں ہی کے پیچھے ہیں، اور اس سے بڑھ کر گمراہ کون جو اپنی خواہش کی پیروی کرے اللہ کی ہدایت سے جدا، بیشک اللہ ہدایت ہیں فرماتا ظالم لوگوں کو،

وَإِذَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦٓ إِنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلِهِۦ مُسْلِمِينَ

And when it is recited unto them, they say: We believe in it. Lo! it is the Truth from our Lord. Lo! even before it we were of those who surrender (unto Him).

These will be given their reward twice over, because they are steadfast and repel evil with good, and spend of that wherewith We have provided them,

وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱللَّغْوَ أَعْرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ لَنَآ أَعْمَٰلُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَٰلُكُمْ سَلَٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا نَبْتَغِى ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ

⦿

And when they hear vanity they withdraw from it and say: Unto us our works and unto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant.

and when they hear vain talk, they avoid it and say, [Our deeds belong to us, and your deeds belong to you. Peace be to you. We do not court the ignorant.]

When they hear impious words, they ignore them, saying, [We shall be responsible for our deeds and you will be responsible for yours. Peace be with you. We do not want to become ignorant.]

And when they hear idle talk they turn aside from it and say: We shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds; peace be on you, we do not desire the ignorant.

and when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it and say, [We have our actions and you have yours. We wish you peace. We will have nothing to do with the ignorant.]

اور جب لغو بات سنتے ہیں تو کنارہ کشی اختیار کرتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں کہ ہمارے لئے ہمارے اعمال ہیں اور تمہارے لئے تمہارے اعمال ہیں تم پر ہمارا سلام کہ ہم جاہلوں کی صحبت پسند نہیں کرتے ہیں

اور جب انہوں نے بیہودہ بات سنی تو یہ کہہ کر اس سے کنارہ کش ہو گئے کہ ——ہمارے اعمال ہمارے لیے اور تمہارے اعمال تمہارے لیے، تم کو سلام ہے، ہم جاہلوں کا سا طریقہ اختیار نہیں کرنا چاہتے——

اور جب بیہودہ بات سنتے ہیں اس سے تغافل کرتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں ہمارے لیے ہمارے عمل اور تمہارے لیے تمہارے عمل، بس تم پر سلام ہم جاہلوں کے غرضی (چاہنے والے) نہیں

اور وہ جب کوئی فضول بات سنتے ہیں تو اس سے روگردانی کرتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں کہ ہمارے اعمال ہمارے لئے ہیں اور تمہارے اعمال تمہارے لئے! تم کو سلام! ہم جاہلوں کو پسند نہیں کرتے۔

Lo! thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest, but Allah guideth whom He will. And He is Best Aware of those who walk aright.

You cannot guide whomever you wish, but [it is] Allah [who] guides whomever He wishes, and He knows best those who are guided.

Surely you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He pleases, and He knows best the followers of the right way.

وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِن نَّتَّبِعِ ٱلْهُدَىٰ مَعَكَ نُتَخَطَّفْ مِنْ أَرْضِنَآ ۚ أَوَلَمْ نُمَكِّن لَّهُمْ حَرَمًا ءَامِنًۭا يُجْبَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ ثَمَرَٰتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ رِّزْقًۭا مِّن لَّدُنَّا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

And they say: If we were to follow the Guidance with thee we should be torn out of our land. Have We not established for them a sure sanctuary, whereunto the produce of all things is brought (in trade), a provision from Our presence? But most of them know not.

They say, [If we follow the guidance with you, we will be forced out of our territory.] Did We not establish a secure sanctuary for them where fruits of all kinds are brought as a provision from Us? But most of them do not know.

They, (the pagans), say, [If we were to follow your guidance we would be snatched away from our land. Have We not given them the secure, holy precinct wherein all types of fruits are brought to them as a sustenance from Us? However, many of them do not know it.

And they say: If we follow the guidance with you, we shall be carried off from our country. What! have We not settled them in a safe, sacred territory to which fruits of every kind shall be drawn?-- a sustenance from Us; but most of them do not know.

اور یہ کفاّر کہتے ہیں کہ ہم آپ کے ساتھ حق کی پیروی کریں گے تو اپنی زمین سے اچک لئے جائیں گے تو کیا ہم نے انہیں ایک محفوظ حرم پر قبضہ نہیں دیا ہے جس کی طرف ہر شے کے پھل ہماری دی ہوئی روزی کی بنا پر چلے آرہے ہیں لیکن ان کی اکثریت سمجھتی ہی نہیں ہے

وہ کہتے ہیں ——اگر ہم تمہارے ساتھ اِس ہدایت کی پیروی اختیار کر لیں تو اپنی زمین سے اُچک لیے جائیں گے—— کیا یہ واقعہ نہیں ہے کہ ہم نے ایک پرامن حرم کو ان کے لیے جائے قیام بنا دیا جس کی طرف ہر طرح کے ثمرات کھچے چلے آتے ہیں، ہماری طرف سے رزق کے طور پر؟ مگر ان میں سے اکثر لوگ جانتے نہیں ہیں

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍۭ بَطِرَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ فَتِلْكَ مَسَٰكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَن مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا ۖ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ

And how many a community have We destroyed that was thankless for its means of livelihood! And yonder are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them save a little. And We, even We, were the inheritors.

How many a town We have destroyed that exulted in its lifestyle! There lie their dwellings, uninhabited after them except by a few, and We were the [sole] inheritors.

وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يَبْعَثَ فِىٓ أُمِّهَا رَسُولًۭا يَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا ۚ وَمَا كُنَّا مُهْلِكِى ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ إِلَّا وَأَهْلُهَا ظَٰلِمُونَ

And never did thy Lord destroy the townships, till He had raised up in their mother(-town) a messenger reciting unto them Our revelations. And never did We destroy the townships unless the folk thereof were evil-doers.

Your Lord would not destroy the towns until He had raised an apostle in their mother city to recite to them Our signs. We would never destroy the towns except when their people were wrongdoers.

Your Lord did not destroy the people of the towns without first sending a Messenger to the mother town who would recite His revelations to them. We did not want to destroy the towns if the people therein were not unjust.

And your Lord never destroyed the towns until He raised in their metropolis an apostle, reciting to them Our communications, and We never destroyed the towns except when their people were unjust.

And whatsoever ye have been given is a comfort of the life of the world and an ornament thereof; and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting. Have ye then no sense?

Whatever things you have been given are only the wares of the life of this world and its glitter, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will you not exercise your reason?

Whatever you (people) have been given are only the means for enjoyment and beauty of the worldly life, but the means of enjoyment (which you will receive from God) in the life to come will be better and everlasting. Will you then not take heed?

And whatever things you have been given are only a provision of this world's life and its adornment, and whatever is with Allah is better and more lasting; do you not then understand?

أَفَمَن وَعَدْنَٰهُ وَعْدًا حَسَنًۭا فَهُوَ لَٰقِيهِ كَمَن مَّتَّعْنَٰهُ مَتَٰعَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ثُمَّ هُوَ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ

Is he whom We have promised a fair promise which he will find (true) like him whom We suffer to enjoy awhile the comfort of the life of the world, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be of those arraigned?

Is he to whom We have given a good promise, which he will receive, like him whom We have provided the wares of the life of this world, but who will be arraigned on the Day of Resurrection?

Is the case of those to whom We have promised good things - which they will certainly receive in the life to come - equal to the case of those to whom We have granted the means of enjoyment in the worldly life and who will certainly be questioned about them in the life to come?

Is he to whom We have promised a goodly promise which he shall meet with like him whom We have provided with the provisions of this world's life, then on the day of resurrection he shall be of those who are brought up?

Can someone to whom We have made a gracious promise and who will see it fulfilled, be compared to someone We have allowed to enjoy a worldly life, awhile, and who will be brought up [before God] for his accounting on the Day of Resurrection?

کیا وہ بندہ جس سے ہم نے بہترین وعدہ کیا ہے اور وہ اسے پا بھی لے گا اس کے مانند ہے جسے ہم نے دنیا میں تھوڑی سی لذّت دے دی ہے اور پھر وہ روزہ قیامت خدا کی بارگاہ میں کھینچ کر حاضر کیا جائے گا

بھلا وہ شخص جس سے ہم نے اچھا وعدہ کیا ہو اور وہ اسے پانے والا ہو کبھی اس شخص کی طرح ہو سکتا ہے جسے ہم نے صرف حیات دنیا کا سروسامان دے دیا ہو اور پھر وہ قیامت کے روز سزا کے لیے پیش کیا جانے والا ہو؟

تو کیا وہ جسے ہم نے اچھا وعدہ دیا تو وہ اس سے ملے گا اس جیسا ہے جسے ہم نے دنیوی زندگی کا برتاؤ برتنے دیا پھر وہ قیامت کے دن گرفتار کرکے حاضر لایا جائے گا

کیا وہ شخص جس سے ہم نے اچھا وعدہ کیا ہے اور وہ اسے پانے والا بھی ہے۔ اس شخص کی مانند ہو سکتا ہے جسے ہم نے صرف دنیوی زندگانی کا (چند روزہ) سامان دیا ہے۔ اور پھر قیامت کے دن (سزا کیلئے پکڑ کر) حاضر کیا جائے گا۔

On the day when He will call unto them and say: Where are My partners whom ye imagined?

اور (بھول نہ جائیں یہ لوگ) اُس دن کو جب کہ وہ اِن کو پکارے گا اور پوچھے گا ——کہاں ہیں میرے وہ شریک جن کا تم گمان رکھتے تھے؟——

اور جس دن انہیں ندا کرے گا تو فرمائے گا کہاں ہیں میرے وہ شریک جنہیں تم گمان کرتے تھے،

قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَوْلُ رَبَّنَا هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلَّذِينَ أَغْوَيْنَآ أَغْوَيْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا غَوَيْنَا ۖ تَبَرَّأْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ۖ مَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِيَّانَا يَعْبُدُونَ

Those concerning whom the Word will have come true will say: Our Lord! These are they whom we led astray. We led them astray even as we ourselves were astray. We declare our innocence before Thee: us they never worshipped.

Those against whom the word had become due will say, [Our Lord! These are the ones whom we have perverted. We perverted them as we were perverse ourselves. We repudiate them before You: it was not us that they worshipped.]

⦿

Those who have become subject to punishment will say, [Lord, they seduced us.] Their idols will say, [We seduced them but we renounce their worshipping us for it was not us whom they worshipped].

⦿

Those against whom the sentence has become confirmed will say: Our Lord! these are they whom we caused to err; we caused them to err as we ourselves did err; to Thee we declare ourselves to be clear (of them); they never served Us.

And those on whom sentence has been passed, will say, [Our Lord, these are the ones who led us astray. We led them astray as we ourselves were led astray. We now dissociate ourselves from them before You; it was not us that they worshipped.]

تو جن شرکائ پر عذاب ثابت ہوچکا ہوگا وہ کہیں گے کہ پروردگار یہ ہیں وہ لوگ جن کو ہم نے گمراہ کیا ہے اور اسی طرح گمراہ کیا ہے جس طرح ہم خود گمراہ ہوئے تھے لیکن اب ان سے برائت چاہتے ہیں یہ ہماری عبادت تو نہیں کررہے تھے

یہ قول جن پر چسپاں ہو گا وہ کہیں گے ——اے ہمارے رب، بے شک یہی لوگ ہیں جن کو ہم نے گمراہ کیا تھا، اِنہیں ہم نے اُسی طرح گمراہ کیا جیسے ہم خود گمراہ ہوئے ہم آپ کے سامنے براءت کا اظہار کرتے ہیں یہ ہماری تو بندگی نہیں کرتے تھے——

کہیں گے وہ جن پر بات ثابت ہوچکی اے ہمارے رب یہ ہیں وہ جنہیں ہم نے گمراہ کیا، ہم نے انہیں گمراہ کیا جیسے خود گمراہ ہوئے تھے ہم ان سے بیزار ہوکر تیری طرف رجوع لاتے ہیں وہ ہم کو نہ پوجتے تھے

جن پر خدا کا حکم (عذاب) نافذ ہو چکا ہوگا۔ کہیں گے اے ہمارے پروردگار! یہ ہیں وہ لوگ جنہیں ہم نے گمراہ کیا تھا ہم نے انہیں اسی طرح گمراہ کیا تھا جیسے ہم خود گمراہ تھے (اب) ہم تیری بارگاہ میں (ان سے) برأت کا اظہار کرتے ہیں کہ یہ ہماری پرستش نہیں کیا کرتے تھے۔

And it will be said: Cry unto your (so-called) partners (of Allah). And they will cry unto them, and they will give no answer unto them, and they will see the Doom. Ah, if they had but been guided!

It will be said, [Invoke your partners!] So they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them, and they will sight the punishment, wishing they had followed guidance.

Thy Lord bringeth to pass what He willeth and chooseth. They have never any choice. Glorified be Allah and Exalted above all that they associate (with Him)!

Your Lord creates whatever He wishes and chooses: they have no choice. Immaculate is Allah and exalted above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him].

Your Lord creates and chooses (to grant mercy) to whomever He wants. (In matters of guidance) they (unbelievers) do not have the choice to choose whatever they want. God is too exalted to be considered equal to anything else.

This website is a work of passion. It exists only for a couple of reasons:

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
2) You must also know what the bare truth is, so we can work together.
