يُخَٰدِعُونَ
They attempt to deceive
ٱللَّهَ
the One
وَٱلَّذِينَ
and the ones who
ءَامَنُوا۟
have conviction,
وَمَا
but not
يَخْدَعُونَ
it deceives
إِلَّآ
nothing but
أَنفُسَهُمْ
their own selves
وَمَا
while not
يَشْعُرُونَ
it is realized by them.
٢
٩
يُخَٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ They attempt to deceive the One and the ones who have conviction, but not it deceives nothing but their own selves while not it is realized by them.

They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

They seek to deceive Allah and those who have faith, yet they deceive no one but themselves, but they are not aware. - Qarai, Ali Quli

In
قُلُوبِهِم
their hearts is
مَّرَضٌۭ
a disease
فَزَادَهُمُ
so increases them,
ٱللَّهُ

مَرَضًۭا
in sickness.
ۖ
وَلَهُمْ
And for them
عَذَابٌ
a punishment that is
أَلِيمٌۢ
painful
بِمَا
because of what
كَانُوا۟
they are
يَكْذِبُونَ
lying about.
٢
١٠
فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًۭا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ In their hearts is a disease so increases them, the One, in sickness. And for them a punishment that is painful because of what they are lying about.

In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

There is a sickness in their hearts; then Allah increased their sickness, and there is a painful punishment for them because of the lies they used to tell. - Qarai, Ali Quli

وَإِذَا
And whenever
قِيلَ
was said
لَهُمْ
to them,
لَا
[Don't
تُفْسِدُوا۟
spread corruption
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the land!],
قَالُوٓا۟
they replied,
إِنَّمَا
[On the contrary
نَحْنُ
we are
مُصْلِحُونَ
those who are doing good].
And whenever was said to them, [Don't spread corruption in the land!], they replied, [On the contrary we are those who are doing good].

And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When they are told, [Do not cause corruption on the earth,] they say, [We are only reformers!] - Qarai, Ali Quli

When they are told not to commit corruption in the land, they reply, [We are only reformers]. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when it is said to them, Do not make mischief in the land, they say: We are but peace-makers. - Shakir, Habib

When they are told, [Do not cause corruption in the land,] they say, [We are only promoters of peace,] - Wahiduddin Khan

جب ان سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ زمین میں فساد نہ برپا کرو تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم تو صرف اصلاح کرنے والے ہیں - Jawadi, Zeeshan

جب کبھی ان سے کہا گیا کہ زمین پر فساد برپا نہ کرو تو انہوں نے یہی کہا کہ ہم تو اصلاح کرنے والے ہیں - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اوران سے کہا جائے زمین میں فساد نہ کرو، تو کہتے ہیں ہم تو سنوارنے والے ہیں، - Ahmed Raza

Is it not that
إِنَّهُمْ

وَلَٰكِن
when in fact
لَّا

يَشْعُرُونَ
it is realized by them?
Is it not that indeed they themselves are the spreaders of corruption when in fact not it is realized by them?
⦿
Are not they indeed the mischief-makers? But they perceive not. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Behold! They are themselves the agents of corruption, but they are not aware. - Qarai, Ali Quli

قَالُوٓا۟
they replied,
أَنُؤْمِنُ
[Should we trust
كَمَآ
as how
ءَامَنَ
trust
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ
the fools?]
ۗ
أَلَآ
Is it not that
إِنَّهُمْ
indeed they
هُمُ
themselves are
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ
the fools
وَلَٰكِن
when in fact
لَّا
not
يَعْلَمُونَ
it is known by them?
٢
١٣
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ ءَامِنُوا۟ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ And whenever was said to them, [Have trust as how should have trust the sensible people], they replied, [Should we trust as how trust the fools?] Is it not that indeed they themselves are the fools when in fact not it is known by them?

And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe? are not they indeed the foolish? But they know not. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

And when they are told, [Believe like the people who have believed,] they say, [Shall we believe like the fools who have believed?] Behold! They are themselves the fools, but they do not know. - Qarai, Ali Quli

When they are told to believe as everyone else does, they say, [Should we believe as fools do?] In fact, they themselves are fools, but they do not know it. - Sarwar, Muhammad

And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe, they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know. - Shakir, Habib

And when they are told, [Believe as other people have believed,] they say, [Are we to believe just as fools believe?] Surely they are the fools, even though they do not realize it. - Wahiduddin Khan

جب ان سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ دوسرے مومنین کی طرح ایمان لے آؤ تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم بے وقوفوں کی طرح ایمان اختیار کرلیں حالانکہ اصل میں یہی بے وقوف ہیں اور انہیں اس کی واقفیت بھی نہیں ہے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

اور جب ان سے کہا گیا جس طرح دوسرے لوگ ایمان لائے ہیں اسی طرح تم بھی ایمان لاؤ تو انہوں نے یہی جواب دیا ——کیا ہم بیوقوفوں کی طرح ایمان لائیں؟—— خبردار! حقیقت میں تو یہ خود بیوقوف ہیں، مگر یہ جانتے نہیں ہیں - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور جب ان سے کہا جائے ایمان لاؤ جیسے اور لوگ ایمان لائے تو کہیں کیا ہم احمقوں کی طرح ایمان لے آئیں سنتا ہے وہی احمق ہیں مگر جانتے نہیں - - Ahmed Raza

اور جب ان سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ تم بھی اسی طرح ایمان لاؤ جس طرح اور لوگ ایمان لائے ہیں تو وہ کہتے ہیں کہ کیا ہم بیوقوفوں کی طرح ایمان لائیں؟ خبردار۔ یہی لوگ خود بیوقوف ہیں لیکن جانتے نہیں ہیں۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

[We believe!],
وَإِذَا
and whenever
خَلَوْا۟
alone
إِلَىٰ
with
شَيَٰطِينِهِمْ
their cognitively-dumb cohorts
قَالُوٓا۟
they say,
إِنَّا
[Certainly we are
مَعَكُمْ
with you,
إِنَّمَا
just that
نَحْنُ
we are
مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ
having fun at their expense].
٢
١٤
وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ And whenever they meet the ones who believe they say, [We believe!], and whenever alone with their cognitively-dumb cohorts they say, [Certainly we are with you, just that we are having fun at their expense].

And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

When they meet the faithful, they say, [We believe,] but when they are alone with their devils, they say, [We are with you; we were only deriding [them].] - Qarai, Ali Quli
⦿
To the believers they declare belief and, in secret to their own devils, they say, [We were only mocking]. - Sarwar, Muhammad
⦿
And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking. - Shakir, Habib
⦿
When they meet those who believe, they say, [We believe.] But when they are alone with their evil leaders, they say, [We are really with you; we were only mocking.] - Wahiduddin Khan

جب یہ صاحبانِ ایمان سے ملتے ہیںتو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم ایمان لے آئے اور جب اپنے شیاطین کی خلوتوں میں جاتے ہیں تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم تمہاری ہی پارٹی میں ہیں ہم تو صرف صاحبانِ ایمان کا مذاق اڑاتے ہیں - Jawadi, Zeeshan

جب یہ اہل ایمان سے ملتے ہیں، تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم ایمان لائے ہیں اور جب علیحدگی میں اپنے شیطانوں سے ملتے ہیں، تو کہتے ہیں کہ اصل میں تو ہم تمہارے ساتھ ہیں اور ان لوگوں سے محض مذاق کر رہے ہیں - Maududi, Abul A'ala

اور جب ایمان والوں سے ملیں تو کہیں ہم ایمان لائے اور جب اپنے شیطانوں کے پاس اکیلے ہوں تو کہیں ہم تمہارے ساتھ ہیں، ہم تو یونہی ہنسی کرتے ہیں- - Ahmed Raza

اور یہ لوگ جب اہل ایمان سے ملتے ہیں تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم بھی ایمان لائے ہیں اور جب علیحدگی میں اپنے شیطانوں سے ملتے ہیں تو کہتے ہیں کہ ہم تو تمہارے ساتھ ہیں ان (مسلمانوں) سے تو ہم صرف مذاق کر رہے ہیں۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

The One
يَسْتَهْزِئُ
makes mockery
بِهِمْ
about them,
وَيَمُدُّهُمْ
and it reinforces them
فِى
in
طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ
their rebellion,
يَعْمَهُونَ
blinding them.
The One makes mockery about them, and it reinforces them in their rebellion, blinding them.
⦿
Allah (Himself) doth mock them, leaving them to wander blindly on in their contumacy. - Pickthall, Marmaduke
⦿
It is Allah who derides them, and leaves them bewildered in their rebellion. - Qarai, Ali Quli

God mocks them and gives them time to continue blindly in their transgressions. - Sarwar, Muhammad

Allah shall pay them back their mockery, and He leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on. - Shakir, Habib

God will requite them for their mockery, and draw them on, for a while, to wander blindly in their insolence. - Wahiduddin Khan

حالانکہ خدا خود ان کو مذاق بنائے ہوئے ہے اور انہیںسرکشی میں ڈھیل دیئے ہوئے ہے جو انہیں نظر بھی نہیں آرہی ہے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

Those are
ٱلَّذِينَ
the ones who
ٱشْتَرَوُا۟
exchanged
ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ
the misguidance
بِٱلْهُدَىٰ
through guidance,
فَمَا
thus not
رَبِحَت
prospered
تِّجَٰرَتُهُمْ
their trade,
وَمَا
and not
كَانُوا۟
they were
مُهْتَدِينَ
those who were guided.
٢
١٦
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَٰرَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهْتَدِينَ Those are the ones who exchanged the misguidance through guidance, thus not prospered their trade, and not they were those who were guided.
⦿
These are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, so their commerce doth not prosper, neither are they guided. - Pickthall, Marmaduke

They are the ones who bought error for guidance, so their trade did not profit them, nor were they guided. - Qarai, Ali Quli
⦿
They have traded guidance for error, but their bargain has had no profit and they have missed the true guidance. - Sarwar, Muhammad

These are they who buy error for the right direction, so their bargain shall bring no gain, nor are they the followers of the right direction. - Shakir, Habib

Such are those who have taken misguidance in exchange for guidance; but their bargain does not profit them, nor have they found true guidance. - Wahiduddin Khan

یہی وہ لوگ ہیں جنہوں نے ہدایت کو دے کرگمراہی خرید لی ہے جس تجارت سے نہ کوئی فائدہ ہے اور نہ اس میں کسی طرح کی ہدایت ہے - Jawadi, Zeeshan

یہ وہ لوگ ہیں جنہوں نے ہدایت کے بدلے گمراہی خرید لی ہے، مگر یہ سودا ان کے لیے نفع بخش نہیں ہے اور یہ ہرگز صحیح راستے پر نہیں ہیں - Maududi, Abul A'ala

یہ لوگ جنہوں نے ہدایت کے بدلے گمراہی خریدی تو ان کا سودا کچھ نفع نہ لایا اور وہ سودے کی راہ جانتے ہی نہ تھے - - Ahmed Raza

یہی وہ لوگ ہیں جنہوں نے ہدایت کے بدلے گمراہی خریدلی۔ سو نہ تو ان کی تجارت سود مند ہوئی اور نہ ہی انہیں ہدایت نصیب ہوئی۔ - Najafi, Muhammad

Their example is
كَمَثَلِ
like that of
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
ٱسْتَوْقَدَ
ignited
نَارًۭا
a burning torch,
فَلَمَّآ
then when
أَضَآءَتْ
lit up
مَا
what was
حَوْلَهُۥ
around him,
ذَهَبَ
betook
ٱللَّهُ
the One
بِنُورِهِمْ
with their sight
وَتَرَكَهُمْ
and left them
فِى
in
ظُلُمَٰتٍۢ
darknesses
لَّا
not
يُبْصِرُونَ
which they can see.

١٧
مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًۭا فَلَمَّآ أَضَآءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُۥ ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِى ظُلُمَٰتٍۢ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ Their example is like that of the one who ignited a burning torch, then when lit up what was around him, betook the One with their sight and left them in darknesses not which they can see.

Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindleth fire, and when it sheddeth its light around him Allah taketh away their light and leaveth them in darkness, where they cannot see, - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Their parable is that of one who lighted a torch, and when it had lit up all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them sightless in a manifold darkness. - Qarai, Ali Quli

(Their case) is like that of one who kindles a fire and when it grows bright God takes away its light leaving him in darkness (wherein) he cannot see (anything). - Sarwar, Muhammad

اِن کی مثال ایسی ہے جیسے ایک شخص نے آگ روشن کی اور جب اُس نے سارے ماحول کو روشن کر دیا تو اللہ نے اِن کا نور بصارت سلب کر لیا اور انہیں اس حال میں چھوڑ دیا کہ تاریکیوں میں انہیں کچھ نظر نہیں آتا - Maududi, Abul A'ala

Or
كَصَيِّبٍۢ

darknesses,
وَرَعْدٌۭ
and thunder,
وَبَرْقٌۭ
and lightning
يَجْعَلُونَ
— they put
أَصَٰبِعَهُمْ
their fingers
فِىٓ
in
ءَاذَانِهِم
their ears
مِّنَ
from
ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ
the thunderbolts
حَذَرَ
fearing
ٱلْمَوْتِ
the death —
ۚ
وَٱللَّهُ
and the One is
مُحِيطٌۢ
encompassed
بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ
around the deniers.

١٩
أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَٰتٌۭ وَرَعْدٌۭ وَبَرْقٌۭ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطٌۢ بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ Or like a pour down from the sky, in it darknesses, and thunder, and lightning — they put their fingers in their ears from the thunderbolts fearing the death — and the One is encompassed around the deniers.

Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death, Allah encompasseth the disbelievers (in His guidance, His omniscience and His omnipotence). - Pickthall, Marmaduke

Or that of a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and lightning: they put their fingers in their ears due to the thunderclaps, apprehensive of death; and Allah besieges the faithless. - Qarai, Ali Quli

Or it is like that of a rain storm with darkness, thunder, and lightning approaching. They cover their ears for fear of thunder and death. God encompasses those who deny His words. - Sarwar, Muhammad

Or like abundant rain from the cloud in which is utter darkness and thunder and lightning; they put their fingers into their ears because of the thunder peal, for fear of death, and Allah encompasses the unbelievers. - Shakir, Habib

Or their case is like that of heavy rain pouring down from the clouds, accompanied by darkness, thunder and lightning; they thrust their fingers in their ears at the sound of thunderclaps for fear of death. God thus encompasses those who deny the truth. - Wahiduddin Khan

ان کی دوسری مثال آسمان کی اس بارش کی ہے جس میں تاریکی اور گرج چمک سب کچھ ہوکہ موت کے خوف سے کڑک دیکھ کر کانوں میں انگلیاں رکھ لیں. حالانکہ خدا کافروں کا احاطہ کئے ہوئے ہے اور یہ بچ کر نہیں جاسکتے ہیں - Jawadi, Zeeshan

یا پھر ان کی مثال یوں سمجھو کہ آسمان سے زور کی بارش ہو رہی ہے اور اس کے ساتھ اندھیری گھٹا اور کڑک چمک بھی ہے، یہ بجلی کے کڑاکے سن کر اپنی جانوں کے خوف سے کانوں میں انگلیاں ٹھو نسے لیتے ہیں اور اللہ اِن منکرین حق کو ہر طرف سے گھیرے میں لیے ہوئے ہے - Maududi, Abul A'ala
